I was one of the blessed performers to have been taken from Nairobi Kenya to Vancouver by the United Nations to perform poetry at the 3rd World Urban Forum. The topic in dealing was Urban Sustainability. Here is one of the poems I performed there.
UNLESS WE'RE FORCED TO
(SUNG)
I dont think that people will change
Unless we're forced to we wont be
Giving up our Range
Or our Mercedes
Its all about the money
(SPOKEN)
And when it hits its going to be disaster recovery
we have received warning for a long time now
Earths climate is changing
its toxic when its raining and the sun
stimulates the growth of cancerous cells
even in skin protected with menelin
we are at risk of lung disease
because even the trees cant renew this C02 into oxygen
and oxygen is lacking
the Earth is cracking caughing dropping signs of global warming
and we are still steering in the wrong direction
increasing oil prices increasing landfill increasing tin cans increasing increasing increasing
space decreasing
and at this rate we place more value on a Nike shoe lace
than we do the crafting slave child
the one who died of Aids child
and it is sickening that a shoe can hold more value than some human lives do
increasing increasing population increasing
2billion 4billion 6billion and counting up up up and our counting up up up is our count down down
down we go
the trees we chop take hundereds of years to grow and I know you have heard the warnings
the Earth cracking caughing dropping signs of global warming are appearing and we are still steering in the wrong direction
and that is why I say to you
(SUNG)
I dont think that people will change
unless we're forced to we wont be
giving up our Range
or our Mercedes
Its all about the money
