Drive for show, putt for dough.  The key to low scores - really low scores - is to get your putts accurate.  Getting on the green in 2 is meaningless if it takes 3 or 4 more to putt your ball near enough to the hole to sink it.  So, besides simply practicing your putting, what else can you do to improve? Look to improve your golf fitness.

Get in condition.  Putting is probably the part of the game that requires the most concentration, but at the same, the most flexibility.  You have to consider the speed of the green, any obstructions, any slight breeze.  You have to focus on the speed of your putter, the force with which you hit the ball, and any curvature, no matter how slight.  And you have to be able to filter out distractions like noise, smells, blowing obstructions, and the cell phone.

So how does getting in condition help this?  First, your mind won't be unconsciously checking out the little aches and pains in your body caused by dragging 15 or 20 extra pounds from hole to hole.  Second, your arms and shoulders will be strong enough to hold the club steady despite any breeze.  Third, your concentration and discipline overall will be helped by the process of focusing on and sticking with a conditioning program.  Also, a fitness program that is designed specifically for golf will strengthen those areas that are used most in the sport of golf.

Your time spent away from the links - especially your time over winter, if you live in a "cold" climate - can still be used effectively to improve your golf game.  Use indoor ranges. Use those little putting machines in your office.  And get in shape.  It will improve your golf game AND your life.

Probably best reference for golf fitness is Mike Pederson's The Ultimate Golf Fitness Guide.  This is not a bunch of rehashed exercises that some aerobics instructor thought might be useful for golf, but a manual specifically written from day 1 - page 1 - to improve your golf game by improving your golf fitness.

And, if you are looking for general fitness and nutrition information, check out The FITNESS Portal.
