I get a lot of emails from folks asking me to check on a particular web site or profile that has either offended someone in some way, or that they believe is promoting illegal activities or is a pedophile.
While I don't mind these messages, I want everyone to understand that I am a local law enforcement officer, and am limited by the scope of my jurisdiction. No matter what the person is doing online, I can't do much other than determine the law enforcement agency that has jurisdiction, and report it to them. Since my primary responsibility is to the citizens that live in my jurisdiction, I simply don't have time to run most of these profiles and web sites down and make the proper notifications.
The best thing for you to do, if what concerns you involves a crime, is to make a report to your local law enforcement agency. If you're not sure who to call, visit
www.cybertipline.com. This site is run by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, and acts as a clearing house for complaints. NCMEC will assign their own investigator to follow up on the complaint, and then notify the proper law enforcement agency to handle the complaint. If it involves a MySpace profile, let MySpace know using the "Report Abuse" link that you'll find on the bottom of the page.
Thanks for everyone's desire to keep the web safe!
