Chris Rose of the Times Picayune describes Mandi Thompson's Furnishing Our Neighbors (http://www.nola.com/rose/index.ssf/2009/03/new_orleans_district_attorneys.html) efforts to get the New Orleans District Attorney's Office furnished through the ReDefine 8/29 Program (http://www.furnishingourneighbors.org/redefine.htm).
The New Orleans Musicians Relief Fund was there to move the first load of lamps from the first hotel room in the Astor Crowne Plaza and we remember the sinking feeling of knowing there were 20 floors to go. Thankfully we got help from volunteers who heard our call on WWOZ. Since that day, truckloads of furniture at $8 and $29 have helped displaced New Orleans residents move home, and free furnishings have gone to organizations ranging from the Musicians Village to the District Attorney's office.
Four star furniture and a four star ReDefine 8/29 Download go hand in hand, and the New Orleans Musicians Relief Fund kicked off our downloads with 20 songs at $18.29. We now feature 9 new songs at $8.29 (downsizing!). Also listen for a Peter Holsapple, Chris Stamey, Branford Marsalis tune to come out in early May. The first New Orleans Musicians Relief Fund ReDefine 8/29 download got a 4 Star Rolling Stone review, and our reload has even more tracks about recovery and resilience for this year. A chair to sit on and an instrument to play - that's a New Orleans style welcome home.
NOMRF's ReDefine 8/29 funds raised ensure that musical instruments get into the hands of young musicians while FONF makes sure they have a place to sit down and play. "No matter what life throws your way, you will always need a chair," says Mandi Thompson, FONF Founder. Partners FONF and NOMRF are helping make this happen.
