So I took third place in the International Fingerstyle Guitar Championship at the Walnut Valley Music Festival in Winfield, KS last week. Still can't believe it. My buddy Tim Thompson, who I spent the week camping with, took first. I got to hang out with some of the best musicians I've ever been around and made some very cool new friends.
Before I went down someone jacked my guitar and I cut my finger up real bad. Despite all this I was able to squeek out a third place finish and win a Triggs flat top guitar and a cool little trophy. And it feels really good.
I think the highlight of my first Winfield experience was something called Carp Camp. They threw me in the middle of 100+ instruments and had me play 'Music for a Found Harmonium' sitting knee to knee with Todd Hallawell. After the third or fourth repetition of just the two of us, everybody else joined in. I've NEVER heard anything like it. There's this harmonic magic that happens when you're in the middle that just can't be described. You'll have to experience it yourself. One of the most memorable moments of my life.
See you there next year!
