Athens, Athfest 6/27/09-
Marie's flight was delayed in Philly (what's up with that Philly/Atlanta route eh?). Luckily our friend Julian from Colombia via camp was able to step in and do a great job as fill in drummer. It was 103 degrees in Athens. A bunch of camp staff came down for the show and stayed at our house. Nanny Island and Hope foragoldensummer opened the show at Flicker with terrific sets. We played a super fun set and the place was so alive with sweaty dancing bodies. It was a perfect Athens night. Sphinxie finished off the night and we headed home with the intl's and stayed up until sunrise.
Atlanta, 529 6/29/09-
Marie returned safely and we headed south to Atlanta to play a super neat new venue down the street from the Earl. We ran into Jim from Ham1 at the coffee shop and he came over to see our set (he was performing at the Earl with Liz Durrett). 529 has a great band room and patio. They offer full recordings of the shows and free hotdogs on the patio on Monday nights. We played with Safeword and Johnny Buffalo & the Mutinous Noise. Both bands were super proficient at their instruments. Aaron and Kate (the folks who put on the show) are super sweethearts. You should check out 529 next time your in East Atlanta!
Athens, GO Bar 6/1/09-
We headed back to Athens to play a wednesday night show with Bubbly Mommy Gun and Floridian band Surfer Blood. It was a relaxing Athens night with a nice cool breeze blowing through. We saw a few old friends who were also blowing through town. All the bands played super hot sets. Surfer Blood are really swell guys too! This was our first time at the Go Bar since they built the new stage. It was strange being separated from our friends. We prefer to play on the floor as much as possible but it served as a good practice night for us.
Sylva, NC, Guadalupe Cafe 6/2/09-
Oh man. this town is so golden. Historic downtown nestled in the smoky mountains. Fantastic neighborhood bars, music/record/bike shops, locally grown food served at the restaurants, and it's a short drive to Ashville. I could move there tomorrow. Patton Oswalt once joked about how Athens musicians can perform for their meals, and we did just that at the Guadalupe Cafe. The food was simply amazing. Caribbean/south american/local blend of items. The patrons were really into it, and that always helps. Talk about nice people, I mean wow. Genuine folks in Sylva, NC. Some camp staff showed up and danced along to the songs. Oh, we ran out of songs and no one wanted to leave so we played a couple twice! We'll certainly be returning to cozy little Sylva soon!
