Sometimes I receive repeat questions about shakuhachi. Here is a good one I received today which I thought was worth posting.
Q: It is very difficult to play shakuhachi. Why don't you make Native American Flutes since they are so much easier to play?
A: One way to approach any discipline is to use it as a metaphor to practice
life. There is no way around the fact that there is pain and suffering
in life. Strength and meaning in life comes from perseverance in the
face of impossibility.
This is the case with shakuhachi making and playing as well. It's
inevitable to feel lost many times along the way. Despite the
difficulties, staying with it and building on the smallest of victories
helps create greater victories and deeper meaning. We're always beginners. It never ends.
