For more quirky facts and fun ocean trivia - as well as headlines and wonky science stuff, too -
Visit the Ocean Blog!

An estimated 80 percent of life is found beneath the ocean's surface, while 99 percent of the Earth's living space is contained in the ocean.

[02.21.08] Currently all six sea turtle species found in U.S. waters are listed as threatened or endangered under the Endangered Species Act.

[02.20.08] Nearly a billion people worldwide depend on fish for at least 30 percent of their animal protein, and there are millions more who live in coastal communities which count on fishing for all or part of their income.

[02.19.08] The area of the world ocean is 139 million square miles.

[02.15.08] The sperm whale is the largest of all toothed whales and is the largest toothed animal alive, with adult males measuring up to 20.5 m (67 ft) long.

[02.14.08] "Dolphins are known to have sex for reasons other than reproduction."

Makes sense - after all, what would you do if you found out your world was about to end? And while you're pondering that, check out this way cool video. ...

Happy Valentine's Day!

[02.13.08] A killer whale is really a member of the dolphin family.

[02.12.08] The polar bear is the largest land carnivore on Earth.

[02.08.08] Bluefin tuna have retractable fins and can swim 43 mph.

Recent reports support consuming too much tuna is potentially hazardous for women of child-bearing age and children because tuna is high in toxic element mercury.

Find out what Oceana is doing to combat the problem HERE.

[02.07.08] Shipping fleets emit more carbon dioxide worldwide than most individual countries emit from all sources - only five countries crank out more CO2 than the global shipping fleet. Yet these ship emissions are entirely unregulated.

[Ed Note] ... Sounds like someone missed the boat on that one. ... Won't be that way for long, though, if Oceana campaigners have anything to say about it.

[02.06.08] The blue whale is the world's largest animal ever - even bigger than the largest known dinosaur.

[02.05.08] While a few sharks will eat anything, including garbage, most species are much pickier about their diet. Fish, crabs, squid, sting rays, other sharks and plankton make up the majority of a shark's diet, which also depends on the type of teeth they have.

Sharks play a vital role in maintaining the health of marine ecosystems and their stocks are in serious trouble. Yet, more than one hundred million sharks are killed by commercial fisheries every year. They are intentionally harvested for their fins, meat, or liver oil and they are incidentally caught as bycatch in fisheries targeting other species.

Learn more about what Oceana is doing to save them HERE.

[02.04.08] The longest lived creature on Earth is believed to be a quahog clam that lived to be 405.

[02.01.08] Sea horses aren't the only species in which the male carries the offspring. The sea dragon and the pipefish also have males carry the developing eggs. They're all members of the family Syngnathidae.

[01.31.08] Most shark "attacks" on humans are a mistake, which is why there are so many more bites than fatalities. There are around 350 species of sharks but white, tiger and bull sharks (not nurse sharks like the one in this pic) are the species responsible for the majority of all attacks.

[01.30.08] The octopus is considered among the most intelligent invertebrates. (The one in this image is supposedly opening a container with a screw cap, and let's not forget our friend Louis. ...)

[01.20.08] Some scientists believe killer whales have calls with unique dialects that vary by pod.
