Finally the dispute between WMG and Myspace has been resolved, not globally but in my case they have exempted me from their embargo. So I have updated the music player with songs from my new album and you can now listen to them without my being threatened with legal action!

In other news Youtube are in dispute with PRS which is an organisation in the UK who collects performance royalties on behalf of artists such as me but they don't represent me and I don't agree with anything they do. They seem to be caught up in the old school mentality as well.

As soon as all these organisations realise this is the dawning of a new age and stop being reactionary the better. In their desperate attempts to protect writers and musicians all they are doing is harm. The Genie is out of the bottle stop trying to put it back in and start asking it for wishes which it will surely give.

There is a whole new generation of musicians, they aren't weighed down with all this baggage and maybe got their first listen to music by an illegal download or watching a band on Youtube. They don't think they deserve ridiculous amounts of money they just want to be able to make a living from their music.

I keep saying that maybe I wouldnt have such an easy going approach to downloading if I hadnt made a lot of money in the past but I think Im wrong in saying that. If I was starting out now I would have different expectations and think that this open world is for the good of everyone. You can still sell records but you have to make great great music and you cannot get by resting on your laurels.

Hey Roger!!............How are you doing? Long time no see.......I fully agree with you. These large record labels and companies have to change their old fashioned ways soon. The digital movement can't be controlled as much as they would like it to be. I am fine with that.......It is one of only a few ways that people like myself can promote, as the radio doesn't really go near electronic music the way it should.......I think it will be an interesting day when a company like EMI or universal close their doors.............talk soon.......Matt

Stopping by for greeting. Long time I didn't log in with this profile of mine.......Hope all is fine with you.............Totally agree. Here in Spain things are more or less the same. You even have to pay as a private consumer a certain amount for each cdr you buy, including drives and cd recorders, hard disks, even mobiles, etc... ............It means that I record my own music, save my own music, or decide take my music from the studio to another place in a USB memory stick, and I have to pay money to people I don't know and which don't act on my behalf as I am not affiliated to them................All the best...........DX7 (the ugly brown synth haha).

Hi Roger,........I am glad you are voicing your opinion in regards to having the freedom to express your creativity online (via myspace and youtube).........It seems that the only people making money in the industry are the record companies. Most artists don't see a dime until their debt (cost of making & promoting their album) is paid to the record label first.........I am hoping to adopt a new marketing model so my music can be heard by the masses because record labels aren't banging my door down as of yet.........I'd love to have the ability to to make a living just writing and playing music but for now I will keep my day job with my fingers crossed for the future.........Tara....

If I want to try the music, I watch it on YouTube. ........If I like it and want to support the artist, I buy the album. ........Make sense?

Make a living from their music...imagine that. The record companies have made that idea almost a fantasy. Im in the court of indie labels and direct downloads of records for a fee. The old ideaology of the monster record company raping the artists is dying a slow but constant death..finally.

do not let Metallica read this. Is Lars done crying in his beer after all these years? ....it is kind of a toss up. me being not a musician. i have studied aspects of music during my college career, and only played in a club once, and jammed a few times. my thought is this—for a band trying to reach the mass the new media becomes a great source. on the other hand the new band, musician, etc is loosing money by all the free downloads. who wants to buy their music when it is already free. are they not loosing out if they are not great, but good enough that when a few people saw them live liked them enough to have bought their album in the past, but with the new media now could care less?....i think if you reach great statistics with your music you should handle your sales like NIN. offer free download of the new album yet print a limited amount with cool art for the collectors’ to buy. if you are a huge rocker already, sold out arena’s etc.—does not one make more than enough to pay for that release and several after that?....what does john lydon think?

Who knows where this will lead. Hopefully we will have a sort of marketplace of ideas, from homebuilt myspace sites to traditional companies and marketing campaigns. Or maybe control will revert back to the usual gang of corporate entities and we will get a couple of choices from what they think we want. ....Hopefully that won't happen. We can choose where to spend our money on music (or not to spend any at all) but ultimately if we don't do anything the Wal-marts and the EMIs will suck all the free avenues for sharing and distributing music, and people will grumble about the good ol' days. I like having a lot of free stuff to try out, and not always having to spend money on it. (some of it is good for only about one listen before you realize it's crap) ....Sometimes its hard to justify spending $15 on a CD when you're on a very tight budget. But it's like buying sustainable food, if you don't buy it they will stop selling it. Just my opinion.
