phoenix from fire session
new track:
Homer I

ok, so we came together after a long break.  We met for some food @ cafe brasil.  Discussed the middle east situation, evil government, etc.  Then adjured to Dan's office @ Sugarhill Recording Studio (www.sugarhillstudios.com).

I have to admit the session started off on a bunch of bad notes (literally)  Heba forgot the power cable to the nord, Phil was trying to tell Allen how to play the drums,  Dan was coming off a creative void that lasted almost a fortnight (we learned at the end of the session that he was at the point of quiting sk-1)

The session is named "Phoenix from Fire" because, on top of the above mentioned problems, the first hour or so of the session was chernoble, a complete disaster.   The music wasn't working.  It was looking like the first session not to bear any fruit, which wouldn't be bad odds considering we have had about 18 sessions.  1 dud out of 18 isn't bad.  I knew it was going bad when I saw Dan checking his e-mail.  Can you say dick move?

So after beating a dead horse for an hour or so, Heba suggested that we scrap it and move on (great idea Heba!)

"Homer I" started out as a cool AB groove until Heba said she wanted to lay down some vocals.  What followed was a avalanche of creativity, expression, fraternity and music cohesion.  We looked around the room for a book to draw lyric ideas from and Phil grabbed Homers' Odyssey, hence the name Homer I.  While flipping through the pages we all took our turn with a confident "STOP."  Heba started with a dreamy, reverb-y vocal followed by Allen and his take on a lounge singer.  Next Phil rocked his page with an angry rap style and finally Dan with the intensity of a old school beat poet.

The first vocal take was a keeper for all, and it was also the first time reading through the page as well.  The idea on all participating in the vocals was similar to a Gangster making every member of the crew take part in a crime.  There are no innocent parties in this session.

Phil played bass and microKorg, Allen played bent sk-1 drums, Heba a straight sk-1 through an assortment of effects, and Dan played the same.

"Homer I" was the phoenix that rose from the first and ashes of a shitty session.  It was a great time making great music with great people.  Rejuvinating the sk-1 project and taking us in a new direction once again.

I will post the track with only Heba and Allens' vocal tracks until I get a version with the addition of Dan and Phil.  For more pics of this session go to www.sk1project.com/phoenix

dude. I checked my email as an Enoesque 'oblique strategy'. (not). Heba saved the night, and perhaps the band. I'll remix the song and get it you this afternoon after I record the kazoo band.

love!
