There's Victory In Losing

By: Khalil Abdullah

Have you ever considered that there's actually victory in defeat,
or though you may have lost you still won?
This truth becomes manifest when your attitude becomes the principle,
and you know the best you could do is what you'd done.

And even though your performance wasn't good enough for you to avoid defeat
take pride in knowing that your attitude was great.
For attitude is a factor that captivates more attention,
whether it be a ball game, a race, fight or debate.

For greatness is not always measured by whether you win or lose,
but sometimes based on how you played the game.
That's why sometimes you actually win although by score you lost,
for there's a victory that only attitude can claim.

So the saying about the thrill of victory and agony of defeat
is a phrase that's not necessarily always true.
For though you may have lost the battle there's victory in losing
when you know you did the best that you could do.

I believe Rosie Perez paraphrased this in "White Men Can't Jump":

"Sometimes, when you win, you acktually lose. And sometimes, when you lose, you acktually win. And sometimes, when you win or lose, you acktually tie. And sometimes, when you tie, you acktually win or lose."

To which I'm sure Woody Harrelson replied with words concisely brilliant. Or really stoned and cornseed hokey. Probably the second one.

To wit, these are words of wise wisdom.
