This has been coming for a while, but it seems like today is the day I should post about it.
Maps of Norway is going to cease to be an ongoing concern as of
Saturday, April 4th at the Turf Club in St. Paul. The Turf was the site
of our first show (w/the Mammy Nuns and Duplomacy on a Tuesday), so the
symmetry was appealing, and the Turf has always felt like home.
After five years, over a hundred shows, and two albums, we feel like it
is time to call it quits. We all don’t feel willing or able to put our
all into the band anymore, and have honestly not been practicing as
much as we used to. We took pride in being a tight and well-rehearsed
live band and we don’t want things to get to the point where we aren’t
representing ourselves properly as a band. We haven’t written a new
song in awhile, and more and more it feels like “Die Off Songbird” was
the best album we could do, given our particular talents or lack
thereof. Instead of petering out for another year, we want to go out in
a proper manner.
I would like to personally thank all the bands we played with, the
places we played, and the people that came to see us. It’s been a
pleasure and a privilege to play music with and for so many nice and
intelligent folks. Thanks to everyone for your support and kind words over the years, it’s meant a
great deal to us.
I will really miss playing with Jeff, Rebecca, and Eric, who are all amazingly talented and very genuine and nice people.
Thanks (and sorry) to Keith from Guilt Ridden Pop, who worked so hard
to promote us and get our albums out there in the world. Also thanks to
Gospel Gossip and Baby Guts for being such great label mates.
We hope to put together a fun show for the 4th, so stay tuned!
- Matt, bass.
