Sorry about the shitty teaser recipe yesterday......here's a real one.

GRUNDY COUNTY GREEN BEANS

1 recipe of caramelized onions, 4 cans of green beans- drained, 1 pkg of bacon, 1 can cream of chicken, 1 can of cream of mushroom, 10 oz your favorite cheese, salt and pepper to taste.

Make the onions. (In my one of past blogs) Fry bacon, drain and crumble. Mix all the ingredients together, except the cheese, in a 9 by 13 baking dish. Bake at 350 for 30 minutes. Cover with cheese and bake for another 5 minutes.

Big brothers are the worst, aren't they? I mean, when you are a kid, you can never beat them at anything. I know I couldn't. I had this love-hate thang with my older brother Roger. On one hand, I always wanted to play with him, but on the other hand, I knew he was going to beat me......and that's if noone else, close to his own age was around. Heaven forbid if I made a close game of it. He would either call me names or slug me.

I still remember playing whiffleball with him.....(for those who don't know, whiffleball is just like baseball, except you can throw at the runner to get him out, as long as he's not on base. If the batter makes it to base safely, he says, "ghost runner," then bats again.)....Roger hated to lose at anything, especially his younger brother! The first time I struck him out, he took a few steps to me and threw the ball as hard as he could. Yea, that left a bruise on my forehead.

A real ass right? Well, he was also my protector. Ya see, big brothers feel they are within their rights to pummel younger siblings, BUT....nobody else better lay a hand on them. Believe me, with my smart ass mouth, he saved me from many deserved ass beatin's from older guys. I still respect him to this day, and since I'm a lot bigger and stronger.....the rolls have been reversed.

Which brings me to my point.

Growing up in the mid-west, being young, dumb and ignorant.....I developed this kinda hatred of New York. I always heard of all the gang problems and over population. New York always got mentioned in the daily news. Not to mention, I was a huge Cardinal fan and New York always got the best players....and all the sports press! Like I said, a real hatred, right?

That was until 9/11. When the towers fell, it was like someone shot my brother. I forgot about all the petty little things that brothers fight about. I wanted to take up for my "big brother." I have now come to realize I love New York.....just like a big brother. Don't get me wrong, I'm still a Cardinal fan, but I would have been okay if the Mets would have won the championship.

Did anyone else feel like this on 9/11?

9/11 depresses me. I still know what I was doing that day. It makes me feel sick to my stomach. And you are right for being a Cards fan, because they seriously rock.

i live in ct, in a very affluent town, very close to the NY border. Many of the parents from the town commuted to NYC everyday for work. a couple of my friend's parents were lost in the towers. so it hit us pretty close.

ive always loved NYC and still defend it, even though im now in the boston area.

btw, the mets broke my heart going down looking (wtf beltran?) the red sox are my 2nd fav team and i hate the yankees.

2 outs, bottom of the ninth, full count

and then...nothing

it was like having sex and then having the woman leave without a word rigth before you're about to finish. and then you're left there like "awwww ohhhh why?"

I grew up in the midwest (detriot) but I'm now a "New Yorker" I moved here about a year and a half before 9/11.......As strange as this may sound, I didn't have the pride for New York before 9/11 as I do now. I thought they were rude assholes who didn't know how to drive, but when I saw the support that came from my area, pride replaced my anger at thier supposed "coldness" (Oh and btw, I still don't think they can drive...lol) But I still wanted the Tigers to win not the Mets.....

Well coming from Los Angeles, we have a lot of the same problems. I actually liked New York the one time I visited there. I was supposed to be there on 9/11 for a work convention, but another girl went instead.

Now, back to brothers... I have 4 (3 older & 1 younger). I don't know if they would have stuck up for me or not... probably would have, but 2 of them were too busy getting stoned, and the oldest one was just busy with his life. My parents divorced when I was 12 and my older brothers lived with my dad... so I never really had the big brother watch over me while I was in high school.

I remember I watched in horror and disbelief as the events of 9/11 happened. I called my sons and told them about it...We all watched the news around the clock for awhile and had heated discussions about what we as a country should do. After all our 'family' had been visciously attacked! Being from Jersey, NY is also my neighbor. My Mother was with me that day and in the grips of Alzheimers. We had to turn off the news when she was at the house because she became a little girl in the midst of WW2 again and was in so much fear. My younger son left work, got on his motorcycle and made it into NY city to help out...When tragedy strikes within a family you forget the judgments or the things that irritate you about that one particular family member and you close ranks...Like you said, family can irritate, argue and sometimes bully each other, but no one else better! Nice blog Doug...

Did you know that our World Series television ratings go down when North-Eastern teams are not in the series? This year's ratings were poor. My big brother was a girl. She tried her best to be just like Lucy. At 45...I've finally figured out that she is going to pull the football away right before I kick it. Wiebe

I was living in St. Louis on 9/11. Six months later I had to move to NJ (20 miles as the crow flies from Manhattan).

NYC is truly a different world than the midwest...the pace of life, the EXPENSES, the people...9/11 didn't really change how I felt, it just made NYC seem more human.

BTW - I've been in Yankee Stadium and Busch Stadium. Yankee Stadium is a DUMP and I was worried our car would be outside when we came back, it was in that bad of an area. Busch Stadium is like no other...

Being a New Yorker I must throw you some serious love for this blog.. It was a devistating time that still keeps us on our toes. It used to be that most New Yorkers would be sure to tell you that we are a state & not just a city. But since 9/11 we have become a complete family. I love my fellow New Yorkers, I miss those I lost, and I pray for those who have lost- I pray for those losing their lives fighting to ensure that this does not happen again and have serious respect for the men & women who are still fighting. I am proud to be an American especially when all of America can see that we as a whole were hurt & not just the yankees who love the YANKEES!!

Mad luv to you!

Morning all. I have never had any desire to visit New York (sorry Barb).....To me it's to crowded. Living in the middle of the country, being old, dumb, and ignorant.....I never had a hatred for New York. But after 911, I saw how everyone came together. I still don't want to go there. I just hate being around a large number of people. And sorry, I'm a Yankees fan..

I think I was like most everyone else I know. Prior to 9/11 I felt disconnected from NYC; kind of like it was its own little land, where everyone knew no one, and no one cared. But after I saw the city pull together, and furthermore, our friends and family go off to war, I realized that NYC is just a small fish in this big pond we call the United States. I was impressed at how Rudy Giulani really got his city together and handled the entire situation. The president--and mind you, I am a bleeding heart liberal, who can't stand Geoge Bush--was fairly new to the position, and even he handled the situation with all the grace of a seasoned veteran. Its just a shame it takes such a tragedy to makes us all pull together like that. Oh, and Doug, I always played wiffle ball with a fat red bat and a plastic ball with holes in it!

Never cared for NYC due to all those too-tall buildings (can't grow up in earthquake country and not be wary) - then 9/11 happened - had to see friends, coworkers and my cousin lose their lives before my eyes - so yes, I also want to take up for them as well - but I still will not like the layout of the place.

Besides, it's the people who make the difference.

Being a Red Sox fan I could never root for the Yankess.

Mets..sure

Glad you guys got it last year though.

Been rough last five years for cards fans always having a great record and not being able to win it.

Last year you guys win it and no one expected it.

Go figure.

And I'm a Mets n Yankee fan. I would not mind cheering on the Cardinal's too. my christmas decoration's have the red cardinal birds on them. smile Thanks for sharing.

9/11 changed so many lives, and I never really felt strongly about New York. But 9/11 broke my heart, and yes I felt a lot of compassion for anyone involved in that fiasco. It will be remembered for many generations to come...

Looks like a fabulous recipe btw, I may have to try it.

I was always the big sister, and I tortured my sibling until they got taller than me..but yea I would protect them at all cost back then...

9/11 did alot to change my attitude about America in general. I had been to New York a few times before 9/11. But to be there less than 2 weeks after the towers fell....to still see the smoldering ruins and smell the air with its stench of betrayal still bothers me immensely! I cant look at the photos I took from that day. I became more human, all people became human that day, and its an attitude that hasnt left me much, since.

GM, Doug! GM all!

I loved NY long before 9/11. And I was so proud after 9/11 when I drove through neighborhoods here in the midwest and saw so many flags flying to honor all those who were lost on that fateful day. I was ready to hunt down the bastards that did it and hang them by their units, while poking them up the ass with a red hot poker!!!!
