Hi there!

Yeah, you! Hi!!!!

OK, so we're back since my run in with the (fucking) pox! I'm doing well now, only some scars in my face which looks kinda cool! Not really.

Did a string of festivals and it was nice to be back on track to be honest. First one was in Finland (Ruisrock) and it was amazing! Perhaps I have to move there sometime with my family as it's so insanely great there. Show was awesome! People were chanting "Opeth!" way after we'd gone off stage! The crew behind the stage were amazed and they almost let us back up there to do another tune!!

Next up was Slovienia and Metal camp. Had a nice drive over there from the airport, but as we're getting closer it started raining. Literally pissing down, and then thunderstorms and lightning like there's no tomorrow! We heard we'd might have to cancel, but luckily the second stage was in decent shape so we moved the gig from the main stage and played the smaller one. Was as cool, decent gig. I guess the people we're pretty tired of the rain by then, but they soldiered on and made it a very memorable night for us. Didn't see any other bands but we got a bottle of Tequila from Al Jorgensens (Ministry) wife. A token of their appreciation for…something, I don't know for what!? Very nice gesture however!

Then we went to Greece and Rockwave which was amazing. We had 3 days off at a 4 star hotel right on the beach. Basically it was a brief vacation for us going there. Had Greek salads, souvlaki and tzatzikis every day. Drank with Carcass, shook hands with Patti Smith and hung out with some great peeps! The gig was great too! But the heat almost made me pass out! The Greek crowds has always been fantastic and this was no exception. Great times. Also met some of the dudes from Judas Priest who were headlining. Their show was good! Really enjoyed it even though I was on my ass from a few drinks too many.

Italy and Evolution festival next. Had a pretty good time there. Good food, hung out with the dudes from Pain of salvation, In flames and Dark tranquillity. Well, ordinary Swedish type of "hanging out"…basically cracked a few beers together. After our show (which was great) they skies opened up again and literally the worst hailstorm or tempest or whatever, I'd ever seen started. Forcing In flames to cancel their show. We had hail the size of golf balls bombing our caravans for a good 20 minutes. It was scary! What's happening with the world???

I love Italy, I love our fans there and I love the food, but I hate the bootleggers outside the show. They're selling cheap-looking shitty Opeth shirts on massive stands and no one does anything about it. To be honest, I'd rather our fans there wouldn't wear Opeth shirts at all if them bootlegs were the only option. It's quite horrible! We've started up our own merch company called O-merch which will have the best qualities, the best prices and coming straight from us! Even designed by us! I have no problems with bootlegs when it comes to live albums and collectable stuff like that, but shitty looking, shit-quality shirts? Yes, that bothers me!

Another bad experience in Milan/Italy was the international airport which I think is the worst in the world! We're so ripped off and treated badly I couldn't believe it!  Ugh!!

After Italy we went on to Holland and Bospop which was a cool festival! It was held at the same site that hosted the Dynamo festival a few years back. Now we're playing alongside ZZ top, Ted Nugent and Europe to name a few. Hung out with Europe a little which was cool! Cool guys and great band! They had a brilliant show!!

The Nuge was walking around backstage picking up trash from the floor that us other bands had been leaving behind. Gotta hand it to him! Cleaning up after us kids! He's massive too! I wouldn't mess with him in a million years! I missed his show unfortunately.

And now I'm back home again! The day after coming back I had a recording session scheduled. As some of you might now, we have a new Bloodbath album coming out soon. It's called "The Fathomless Mastery", and it's so massive! It's evil and it's straight on DEATH metal! No fuss, nothing but death! Jonas, Anders and Sodomizer has come up with 11 great songs:

1. At the behest of their death
2. Mock the cross
3. Iesous
4. Wretched human mirror
5. Treasonous
6. Devouring the feeble
7. Hades rising
8. Slaughtering the will to live
9. Earthrot
10. Process of disillumination
11. Drink from the cup of heresy

I wrote some lyrics to some of them but other than that I had no input whatsoever. Anyways, I recorded the vocals during a day and a half and it sounds great! Went for the David Vincent approach and I'm quite happy! The lyrics are so evil it's insane! Not only mine, but Jonas and Anders wrote some pretty retarded stuff too! Don't know when it's released but it's coming out through Peaceville anyways. It's done now, just the other day. All the recordings are done and it will be mixed by David Castillo during the coming week I reckon.

Check out www.bloodbath.biz to see the sleeve (which is also evil as hell!).

Now, I'm relaxing and spending time with my family, but we'll start rehersals soon which will be fun. We're gonna go through a bunch of new songs and a whole lotta ol' material too!

Fredrik will come over to my place so I can teach him some older riffs.

Oh, went to see Yngwie Malmsteen with my wife a few nights ago. Can't say I dug it! I used to absolutely love him, now I could barely stand being in the concert hall, and many others with me. The set list was nice enough but I think he overplays and slaughters every song pretty much. Band was OK but nothing spectacular. I will always think he's the greatest "metal" player in the world, but that's because I know he can play with more emotion than all other widdly woo's out there. I mean, the song "Marching out" alone just send shivers up my spine. Now it's like he's competing and struggling to be "the fastest"! I left the show bewildered and a bit sad to be honest. He's a fucking icon to me, and it was like…."shrug"! Well, well……!

Had a great night out with my wife anyways, can't remember the last time we went out for dinner and to catch some tunes.

OK, I'll let you go….possibly have some time to play GTA 4 tonight!

Take care folks!

Mike

I have to say, it sounds like you've had some amazing times. I'm amazed, really, at how many metalheads there are in the world - it's quite encouraging. Being in the States is rather sad when it comes to that sort of thing...

And it sounds like the Swedish sort of hanging out is right up my alley.

I'm looking forward to seeing Opeth in September!!

Cheers, Mike!

Awesome blog! It was really entertaining and quite down to earth; I caught myself wondering how you aren't bombarded at shows by fans! :P I guess when you're not on stage, no one really notices...

Anyway, have fun playing GTA4; it's a brilliant game.

Last time I was in Athens for MMD with Annihilator, we had a similiar situation...show day, then 3 days off on the Beach...

Aside from heading to the Acropolis, the highlight of the trip was Deep Fried Cheese!

I think it's called Saganaki.

Cheese...deep fried...

What will they think of next?!

Glad to hear you're not looking like a mutant anymore...

Mike glad to see you are getting to relax a bit.

..Uncle Al and his old lady are awesome people!! I'm guessing perhaps it's because Uncle Al & Mrs. J dig the compositional inspiration. He's also a very good man to some friends of mine that are now on his label, and reading you're comments, saying such nice things, only backs up what I know about Uncle Al, He's just a cool cat all around. But, you went into the lands of the ancient Greeks and ..what no Ouzo?? hehe.. Now as far as the Nuge is concerned.. I got yelled at from a member in Metallica for not going up to him and introducing myself.

Ynwgie reminds me of a angry older man who's been trying to bring back his yesteryear...simular to..Blackie playing out in L.A. still....but you've got to witness the great 'ego' and nailed that observation right on the head about his performance..of overplaying stylized blowouts and pulls..
I can't wait to hear the Bloodbath! I'll pour a nice glass and sit back :)

The Fathomless Mastery. That is the best album title ive ever heard and i can relate cause i am definatly bewildered when it comes to spiritual ascenscion as well so ill definatly be anticipating the new release. Glad to hear in flames got canceled due to bad wheather.. I had to sit through one of their shows when i went to see megadeath but its great to know that crowd was spared the headache... fucking pop bullshit you should have kicked in flames asses and hung them up on poles, those fuckers are the reason people dont respect metal in the states and i dont blame them.

The first metal concert I ever went to was the Tulsa Oklahoma show for the Sounds of The underground tour in 2005..

the whole day was sweltering heat, and a lot of fat people and emo bands, I was NOT having fun... Finally you came on around 5 in the afternoon(with Gene Hoglan backing you up)..something peculiar happened. As you guys went into your first song, a bunch of wind started blowing everywhere and as your set went on the the wind got stronger...almost like your songs were conjuring something metaphysical in the atmosphere.... when the set was over the heat came rising back again...and I left the show,.
,

I talk to a few folks who went to that show and we think you're cursed.....

take it easy Mike

Great blog post Mikael - a nice read!

Glad you are over the pox.
But won't a few scares make you look even more 'metal'? ;-)

Your views on Malmsteen, are similar to mine. It's a shame to see him going the way he seems to be heading... Quite sad! Btw, how the fuck does he swing the guitar around his neck and not rip his hair out?? That's always been a mystery to me... *shrugs*

Good luck with the rehersals... Can't wait for the UK tour in November!

Best wishes to you and the band.

I think it's great to read how you perceived your concerts. I was at Bospop and very much enjoyed your gig, but I somehow got the feeling that you are still lacking the edge, due to the illness. But maybe it was just the moment, I don't know.

And there is much talk from fans about missing the Lopez drummer and the other guitarist.
But I have to say, that I really enjoy listening to the current Opeth! The new drummer is absolutely amazing, be sure to pass that on to him, now!

You guys are starting to become really famous and its so weird because you are one of the very few who sell out your style to become rich.. And it seems like you guys know virtually every Famous metal person.. so i cant wait to see you in brisbane it will be me 3rd time seeing you as well as the signing session at Skinnys so yeah thanks for all your music man its still remains to me as one of the best bands i have ever heard and you remain to amaze me with every new album which is very hard because i have so high standards!! so cheers and im glad you have been able to catch up with your family

(Nerd moment :P) Hope your enjoying GTA 4, I was a little disappointed with it because they stripped it of a lot of things I loved about Vice City and San Andreas. I didn't find the story to be a landmark in gaming either, as everyone claims it to be. The story seemed to have just about as much effort put into it as San Andreas.

Since we're on the subject of gaming... I've also been wanting to ask a quick question about Watershed, did you ever play Diablo 2? After listening to the acoustic sections of Heir Apparent a few times it totally reminded me of the eerie music that would play in the background of the first Act. I was wondering if it had influenced you in any way. Video game music has influenced me a few times when I write music of my own :P.

Looking forward to your show in Tucson! I'm gonna be ridiculously giddy when the day arrives.
Hope you guys play April!
