Alright everyone I was just as stunned as the rest the collective Patriot nation when I saw that the Pats only got a second-round pick for Matt Cassel and Mike Vrabel.  At first I was so confused, my head was spinning.

Now that the dust has settled, here is where I am sitting after reflective thoughts ran through my mind along with a few barley and hops yesterday

Tom terrific must have a clean bill of health.

As a true New England fan, I am always a skeptic in thinking that the organization was giving me some "lip service" in telling me that Mr. Brady and his high profile wedding is just fine.  But this deal solidifies the notion that Brady is going to be ready to go for the New England Patriots.  Do you think Billy Belichick would give up Cassel if he thought Brady was 75%?  And this also plays into how much stock Bill is putting into their backup in Kevin O'Connell.

Taking a look at the combine and talent  coming up, this draft didnt require a first rounder.

How many of you sat out there and asked yourself, "Self, do you really think that the New England Patriots are going to sit on 30 million dollars in quarterbacks?"  Or you might have looked in the mirror and asked your smug face, "Face, If all of these other teams in dire need for services at quarterback are looking for their franchise guy, then why do we need to hold onto him if we can get some good compensation for him?"  Look, we all knew it was coming sooner than later to face reality .. this is Tom Terrific's team and we need to accept that.  The hard part for people to swallow is the number of pick in the draft that they gave up.  A high second rounder but it seems to me that Bill Belichick has the innate ability of taking later round draftees and turning them into gems ahead of the big ticket prices players.  Remember, if they get high first round picks, they have to pay for them.  And as I reference later in this blog, the Patriots will probably be spending this money elsewhere in an area where needed like DEFENSE..

Many people have asked me if this had to do with Bill doing Scott Pioli a favor because they are pals.  That is silly talk.

This is not Bill Belichick's first rodeo.  Do you think that this wasn't market driven?  This was a necessary move that needed to be done and the Patriots organization felt that it was a comparable trade to make and both sides winning.  What happens if Cassel is a bust without Moss and Welker and Morris running?  Then the Patriots look like geniuses but what happens if he succeeds then the second round pick we are getting from him and making O'Connell the number two will pay off on the long run.  Either way Patriots will win.  We have to think this way and not with our hearts people!

I know Mike Vrabel was a fan fav but he was a slowing 33 year old linebacker.

Look, we all felt it when WIllie McGinest had to leave.  I felt a hollow part of my heart when Big Willie left for Cleveland and I even felt soured when I saw him in the Browns uniform but it is a fact of life.  Player does well in NE then ages ... then is released but in this case, I think Bill Belichick payed respects to Vrabel by trading him instead of releasing him.  This was a true sign of respect for a guy who gave blood sweat and tears!!

Julius Peppers and Ray Lewis are still viable pickups.

I think that most of us think something will happen and whether it is Peppers or Lewis coming to Foxborough is still left to see but, if it doesn't happen, don't beat yourself up Patriot fans, IN BILL WE TRUST!!On a personal note though, I don't think I want to see Ray Lewis here.  I don't know how well he would do outside of the mythic and god-like mantra he had in Baltimore ... just a thought that I am sure will get some banter about :)

There’s been a lot of action already, and we’re only two days into
free agency. But I think the Patriots are just getting warmed up.

i gotta agree with you with Ray Lewis.... unless we can somehow change the attitude he had in Baltimore, its tough to say he would fill out the Patritoss uniform. Maybe im wrong, but he doesnt seem to have the team oriented attitude that most or all of the Pats organization has, his attitude seems more to focus more around himself

Leave Ray out there. I dont want him. Get peppers and Derrick Brooks. Use the picks to pickup another LB.

I have to disagree with you guys on Ray Lewis... I think he has what it takes to be a Patriot and Remember what some people said when Moss came in.. If they can make him a team player i know that they can pretty much make anyone a team player so i would love to have Ray Lewis on the team however I doubt he will leave Baltimore...

Good points, but I'm not sure if I agree about the whole first rounder argument. Listen to the story today on ESPN.com from Chris Mortensen about the possible deal with Cutler. Apparently, the Bucs were going to give up a first (1st) and a third (3rd) round pick for Cutler, then Denver would have turned over at least the first round pick to the Pats for Cassel. That means the Pats could have had the 12th pick in the draft for Cassel instead of the 34th pick in the draft. Then, given that the Pats didn't want to spend a lot of money on a high draft pick, then they could have traded down and gotten multiple picks later in the draft. My understanding is that another sub-plot between Belichick and a former assistant coach is brewing. First it was Belichick and Mangini, and now it's Belichick and McDaniels. All I can say is if Belichick let politics get in the way of a better deal, then that's bull shit!! Perhaps the story reported isn't accurate, but everything I read suggested that the Pats would definitely get a first round pick for a young quarterback of Cassel's talent. Don't know how we ended up with a second round pick.

im gonna have to agree with E, it seems Bill is always out to get the assistants that leave him, if Mortenson was right the patriots SHOULD have made that deal, we all know Bill has a huge say in things that happen in New England...this may look good, but it sure could've been better

yeah i agree with the cassel thing. we could and should have gotten a first round pick for him(which we could have easly done with a young talent like him) and saved the money by trading down to get a bunch of more 2nd or 3rd rd. picls... and im just shocked and pissed off that we let one of the patriots best just go like that for a bullshit draft pick.. yes it was classy and respectfull of bill to trade and not release vrabel but come the fuck on...a second round pick...that was shitty....and its highly unlikly we will be a main contender for ray lewis...hes got some age and he will want a fat contract for like 4 years that he aint worth this late in his career.

Its all going to work out, by doing this weve given ourselves room to do alot of different things, such as free agents, as noted below ray lewis, julius peppers, but we lost jabbar gaffney, were going to have to get a 3rd wide reciever, levernius coles? t.j. houshmenzadah? all though i havnt heard that speculated, i doubt we want to get alot of offensive players in the draft, none the less bill has got a plan in place and its going to be stellar im shore, keep lookin for updates maybe todays the day when we make another move, PATRIOTS BOUND FOR SUPER BOWL 44!!!!!!!!

As a proud Pats fan and a Kansas City resident, I'm totally disgusted that we only got a 2nd round pick, I mean come on, a 2nd rounder for Cassel is good since he was a 7th round pick, but throwing Vrabel in the mix for the same price is crazy. I too agree that trading rather than releasing was a standup thing to do, but we shouldve at least got a 4th or 5th rounder for Vrabel.. I am online with the Pats Proshop to get some decals and if you hear about a Lees Summit Missouri man being arrested for breaking into Arrowhead( to be renamed Gillette West) and slapping Pats logos on all the Chefs helmets, you'll know it was me.

I'm going to miss Mike Vrabel for however long he is playing on another team! He was my very close second favorite under Teddy! I almost cried when I heard the news. I know it's a part of the whole football process, but i'm still very sad. I love you Mike Vrabel!

NO MORE JABAR GAFFNEY!!?!?!?!?!?!? What the fuck! That's really pissed me off, losing Matt & Vrabel was bad, losing Jabar makes it worse, for me cause I play WR in any football game. .. ..I'm going heart fan right now, I don't want T.J. or Lavernus or anyone else at WR. I WANT JABAR BACK! .. ..Oh, and I do bid well to Matt & Mike with the Chiefs. Most likely Vrabel will be there 1 year & out because they're rebuilding, so Matt will stay and it'll help their two WR's develop & maybe help out the other WR's.

I must be the only one who thinks they could have moves Vrabel to the inside LB position and got a few more years out of him. You cant tell me he is any slower and older than TEDY was and he got the job done. The leadership and experience he brings to the table alone is worth 3 million a year. I guess thats why Belichick is there and I am here. IN BELICHICK WE TRUST

yeah, Gaffney was good, but that wide open TD pass in IND that he dropped would have gotten us to the playoffs. That was an epic failure.

Here is my take on the Vrabel thing, yeah he might be 33 years old and maybe he had a down year last year but just look at his 2007 stats (12.5 sacks) then look at Teddy Bruschi, he hasnt done anything since 2004. I love Bruschi but Vrabel was not the guy to give up on. I would put Lewis in the same categorie as Bruschi a great football play that has lost a step and is getting old. ....If the Pats do sign Lewis where is he going to play? you have Mayo and Bruschi in the middle but you still didnt replace Vrabel on the outside. Hopefully we can pick up stud outside lb in the draft

I am not that sad to see either of them go. I was a little suprised that we only got a second rounder, but I trust Bill fully. I was one of the biggest Vrabel fans out there, he was my favorite on the team (second to Bruschi) but he has been slowing down. He has publicly stated that he didn't agree with the way the Krafts run things, and he never really loved New England. He's really not that nice of a guy either, I had the chance to meet him, and since them I have lost a lot of love for him. .. ..I'm not that sad to see Cassel go, not because I love Tom Brady, but because I don't think he will get much better. I have enjoyed watching him progress and I was impressed by him this season, but he doesn't define the team, neither of them do. .. ..I would love to get Ray Lewis with the extra cap space we have now.

Its interesting to note that The Pats have not drafted good in recent years (2007 was HORRRIBLE!!!!!!) and you can argue that if Gholston wasn't taken by the Jets, the Pats wouldnt have Mayo.......But who cares, in Belichick we Trust

Patriots Rock!! Hate to see Cassel go but can't wait to see what he does....Brady back in action, no doubt he's 99-100% back or Bill wouldn't take the risk! Patriot fans have ALOT to look forward to....can't wait!!

That trade was a steal. Vrabel was the only big loss, but it needed to happen cause he only had one year left on his contract, they needed the cap space, and Cassel wasn't worth anything. The guy couldn't beat a good team.

I knew Cassel was leaving so I wasn't shocked about that one but Vrabel? Didn't see that one coming. I just hate seeing veteran leaders leave. Vrabel epitomized what a Patriot is all about. It SUCKS seeing him leave even though, yes, he is getting old but I always thought I'd see him retire a Patriot. Long snapper Lonie Paxton left too as well as Gaffney. Who do you think will replace Jabar? I'm thinking Marvin Harrison? haha just to piss off Peyton & I wouldn't mind seeing Ray Lewis in a Pats uniform either
