Local rockers of Inhabition know how to pack a punch
Unlike many musical teams, the players in local band Inhabition consider themselves a band of brothers. Some groups like to maintain rivalries of Oasis-like proportions, complete with onstage bickering and an endless stream of "artistic differences" that inevitably destroy the entire project.
Not these guys. The jovial fivesome are truly BFF's in the best possible way.
"We always said when we started we're friends first and band members second," says drummer Ryan Mitchell, 18, known as "Red" by the others.
Along with Mitchell, this alternative metal quintet is Nick Garza, 19, on bass; Ryan Short, 18, on guitar; Nick Capp, 17, on guitar; and Mike Herbst, 20, on vocals.
With all five in the same room, these guys are hard to keep up with. Their conversations go mile-a-minute with inside jokes, peppered regularly with spontaneous fits of giggles. They also have cute, semi-embarrassing nicknames for each other (an endearing way to solve the whole Nick-Nick-Ryan-Ryan problem).
But when I ask them about the music, they get all serious on me, if only for a few minutes.
"Music is pretty much the only thing that makes me happy," says Capp, whom the rest refer to as "Fluffy" because of the curtains of black curly hair around his face.
Short adds, "Every person has little things that run through their head all day and music is the one thing where you can get it out."
The members all cite a variety of influences that shape the music they play, which Garza describes as a purging of the combination of genres and bands the members listen to. Emo, punk, industrial metal, funk, '80s — you name it.
"We eat all these bands and throw them up," jokes Garza of their eclectic mix.
The guys say they live for their Wednesday night practice session, where they joke around, hang out and collaborate on songwriting.
It usually works something like this: one will come up with a guitar or bass line, often while just messing around. When they hear something they like, it's played over and over, sometimes recorded on a cell phone and layered with other parts.
Ninety percent of the time, the music is written before the lyrics, and if they like something but can't figure out how to incorporate it into a song, it's pushed to the back burner until they can.
"It's happy accidents," Herbst says of their songwriting process. "We always say there's no such thing as wrong ideas, just ideas in wrong places."
Another happy accident for the group was the band's name.
During a groggy, late-night emailing session, Short misspelled a recorded music filename meant to be called "inhibition" to a bandmate, and the misspelled version ended up becoming the band's name, for which they all have their own personal meaning.
In the year they've been a group, the guys of Inhabition have some recorded material, and recently began preparation for the recording of an EP.

When it comes down to it, the guys of Inhabition are all about having fun making music they like and have a true sense of appreciation for their brothers who share their first love.
"The best thing about being in a band is having four other guys that are absolutely down-to-earth, passionate and all feel the same way about music," says Garza.
That calls for one of the many "pound-its" of the interview, when the guys punch their knuckles together as the preferred method of showing agreement (or to celebrate a sweet dis).
You can impress this fun bunch at their next show with your best right-hook slug, straight to the knuckles. It's kind of like a best friend hug, but more rock 'n' roll.
