Bob, Bob Bob.....You were our teacher, our mentor and most of all our  friend. You taught us how to write songs, how to change the world, and how to live a life worth living. You were  always there with your life force in all its blazing glory. You could express in ten words and three chords what most people couldn't say in a lifetime .  You could find a nugget of gold in the worst of times and put a positive spin on even  the most dire situation. When our bus broke down in the middle of Colorado on our first tour, some of us talked about throwing in the towel and going home. Luckily, you were there with us. You said " Are you a  band or not? If you are, let's find a way to make it to the gig. If not, you should go home and sell insurance." We made the gig and never looked back. Where did you get that sense of humor? There was that party in Austin. When we got there, someone unscrewed the top off of a new bottle of tequila, threw the cap away and handed you the bottle. "That was a mistake" you said with a chuckle. Several hours later you entered the courtyard, nearly-empty bottle still in hand, and made your way through the crowd and jumped headlong into the pool. Did I mention that you were buck naked? Just then the hostess came out with a horrified look on her face and yelled "My God-there's a drunk biker in my pool." Without missing a beat, you looked up at her, smiled  and said "Lady, I don't even own a bike." But alas, every good party must come to an end. Your body just couldn't keep up with your spirit. You knew it was time to go. You were falling apart at the seams. Hell, you hadn't had a decent lung full of air in years. You abandoned your ramshackled frame and flew off to greener pastures on Earth Day, 2008. Very funny, Bob- it also happened to be my birthday. Let us celebrate your life and not mourn your passing. You will be with us  every gig, every party, every day, every moment. Ladies and gentlemen, Bob Childers has left the building............. brad,
ive been searching for words ever since i got the news, just could not find them.

thank you brad for giving me the words.

i had barely bewgun to know bob the last year or so.i dunno if you remember when we had you guys as spotlight artists at trdm? but about that time i met bob, actualy started the conversation about you and john, man he had me rollin in a matter of minutes.

well we cooked up this big scheme about doing a "founding fathers of red dirt" thing over at trdm.that started the phone calls.between his problems and mine we never seemed to get started on the project, yet we always had time just to talk.

man after just a few weeks,it felt like we had known each other forever. we continued to exchange calls all this time.

when my daughter passed away a few weeks back, bob was the first to call me and say"hey man,if you need me im here" as bad as he was doing he still had time to worry about me.

he was a god among men brad.

thank you for the wonderful tribute that only a true friend could give.

the gypsy now sleeps.

i can only offer this one wish to bob.
"may you always find a road my friend"

please pass that on to him at the service.

thank you

Brad, John, & Ben,

I did not even know about Bob's passing until I accessed your site. What shock and a sad day for everyone who loves Red Dirt Music. Brad, your eulogy is profound and somehow makes it a little easier to accept that Bob has joined Andy. Perhaps they're preparing and shaping a little corner of Heaven into an ethereal Farm, where someday we will be able to jam again with all of the restless spirits.

I am so sad I can hardly take in the full breath of reality that he is out of the building. It is just too sad. Feels like the death of the Prince of the Gypsies. See you guys in July...Marie

The boys from South 40 have Bob in their hearts and prayers, and want to express what cannot be said in words, but Bob means more to our music than most will ever know. Brad said what most were thinking. Thanks for that.

I am sure I'm not the only one who will say...IF NOT FOR BOB, I would not be who I am. When I first moved to Nashville I was still very much a small town school teacher - not exactly liberated in my spirit yet. Bob helped me see everything in a different light and to feel and know what wasn't visible. When I failed to see I was playing the role of a victim, Bob would laugh at me and say, Poor Lil' Sue. The last time we talked I should have known what him being out of breath meant..but somehow I never thought of Bob dying. Thank you for the wonderful words. I agree with what someone else said...there will be many many songs. Words and music will come that we don't know where they came from...until we stop and think. Bob was and is music. He had transcended life as the rest of us know it a long time ago.
