No mincing of words here, right to the point. I am horrified at what has happened at Fort Hood. I am saddened for the same reasons you are, and also for some you may not be - what I witnessed yesterday, at the world's largest Army base, in the greatest nation on earth and the most powerful military...was the Key Stone Cops meets High School Drama.

Again, as in my observations of the media..the information was fast and furious..yet the questions are the same? Who, what, where, why and when? why...why....why....Y?

Can this happen anywhere? Yes. Can it ever happen on a US military base? Yes.  However, the assumption, instantly, that this was some rogue 'off the bend, PTSD', guy made me furious. One, because it is a serious condition that many many veterans deal with on a day to day basis (which is a smack in the face to those who survive with it) and  - then I concluded that the military itself was as to blame for the knee jerk response of that assumption as was the media.

I was watching, as were you as the lock down began, then the SWAT Team was brought in...........STOP THE VIDEO TAPE................THE SWAT TEAM???????? Can someone tell me why at FORT HOOD, the SWAT TEAM was brought in? I don't care what you quote me as far as procedure, what you may 'know' , what you know to be protocol.........I heard SWAT TEAM and said to myself..."this is like a high school shooting for God's sake!"

We then heard that military members on the base don't carry firearms - SOP or not, 'as you know it to be' or not...'when I was on this or that base' or not...........it was blow number 2.

Fast forward......military are rushing OUT of the buildings (although we did hear of the very brave who helped those injured and the stories of the saving of those in pain and you KNOW I am not dismissing that at all.) .....military are rushing to cell phones to call people, on the phone with media describing their 'being afraid, upset, shocked.." how, they, "were in Iraq and never had to go through such trauma"...STAY WITH ME....

Colonel Terry Lee, former co-worker of Hasan.."Hasan said Muslims should fight the aggressors" - That Haslan has said things such as these quite a few times. STOP THE VIDEO TAPE AGAIN............. Lee believed this was investigated by military, but he did not know the outcome.

The AP reported that Hasan was under investigation for internet postings in regards to suicide bombing..............FEEL FREE TO KEEP THE TAPE STOPPED.

Lt. General Cone..the shooter was dead, the FEMALE FIRST RESPONDER OFFICER THAT SHOT HIM WAS ALSO DEAD (Later to be a 'take back') STOP THE DAMN TAPE AGAIN. IF you don't know what is wrong with that statement then come back to me when you do.

In the aftermath, a string of unanswered questions remained about the shooter's motives, his background and whether the military was aware that he posed a risk to his colleagues.

Addressing reporters gathered outside Fort Hood, northeast of Austin, Army Lt. Gen. Robert Cone said of the incident: "It's a terrible tragedy. It's stunning," adding that "soldiers and family members and many of the great civilians who work here are absolutely devastated."

He (Hasan) was recently promoted and transferred to Fort Hood. STOP THE DAMN TAPE AGAIN..........

What I am now about to say needs to be said...deal with it. The last thing this nation needs to see is their US Army running around in a situation such as this as if they do not know their right hand from their left - panicked - chaos...in the face of an attacker...ON THEIR HOME TURF. I want you to try and PICTURE what the enemy sees...........go ahead and stop acting all offended......DO IT. Picture what they are saying right now. .......not a good picture is it............

In Afghanistan, in Pakistan, in Iraq DAILY, they go through worse than what happened at Fort Hood.....how do they react? How do they cope? Do they need 'grief counselors' - do they need 'press conferences'? Do we accept excuses about the attackers? Stay with me..................

Then comes your Commander and says, "Soooooorry we had a oopsie, the shooter I told you was dead, he is alive..and the first responder woman that shot him, she is alive too!" "There was hospital confusion." OH NO.......at this point stop the whole damn picture.

The questions about command, about security, about Hasan and his 'issues', about why the FBI, the SWAT Team and a first responder came in and helped to secure FORT HOOD MILITARY BASE.......are just the beginning of a realization that most of us have come to.......the US Military is not the military of our fathers, not in organization, not in instruction, not in mission, not in training and not in leadership.

Saying this is the hardest thing to say. I want to trust the US military command, I can not. I want to believe they can handle sending our men and women into battle, they can not. I want to see for my own eyes, the command structure and training come to fruition when trouble strikes, I do not. I want to see commitment by the President of the United States when his men are in trouble, I saw ineptitude and he was blind to the needs of his men. Do you see where this is going. This IS NOT about the men and women on the ground, never, no..it is about those in command, be it military or civilian. We have come from a place of confidence to a place of unease, confusion, disjointed goals.

The United States military sends a message when they react to a situation such as this - what happened was absolutely horrific..and from all accounts, it was absolutely (IN THIS CASE) PREVENTABLE. Until we begin as a nation..and indeed YES as a military to address the enemy, to straighten up and tighten up our own house, to use the M word and do so with clarity of purpose, to become a lot more Patton like and a alot less well.......MEOW like...we will see this infiltration more and more, and it will manifest itself with greater intensity.

What I watched today, in Fort Hood Texas...from the media to the military command was like a bad rerun of a bad movie...but the hardest thing to say is that these are ones in charge of our men and women now..and it comes from the top..and it has from many Presidents before this one..but with this one, the manifestation of mediocrity is UNACCEPTABLE TO ME.....

STRAIGHTEN UP YOUR HOUSE PENTAGON......WE WILL TAKE CARE OF THE WHITE HOUSE.......CONGRESS NEEDS TO GET INVOLVED AS WELL AS OVERSIGHT DEMANDS...I don't care where this faltering of military command began, be it correctness  or  multiculturalism Bill Clinton or Barack Hussein Obama.......it must end because the confidence of the US Military is something that can not be allowed to fail.

Excellent observations Rachel.

I just heard on the news that this ratbastard was giving out all his worldly possessions prior to the murderous slaughter he commited. He even gave away his koran !

Suicide tip #1, top of the list, is when someone gives away their possessions. It means they are not going to need them anymore.

The good blogs always are tough to write.

No he was not handing out korans, he gave his own personal koran way. All his furniture. All his personal items he just gave them away. It will be interesting to see if anyone reported this and what the higher ups in the military did.

Bottom line is things don't add up and a lot does not make sense.

You're retarded... got it. My home is ALL brand new furniture and it's a brand new house. However, when shopping for children in poverty and trying to bulk up so kids in the area don't have to go without car seats and swings and strollers and clothes I go to Craigs list. None the less, you missed the point. I assure you, I have nicer stuff than you but that's really not the point. You don't understand military bases at all.

Try... my husband spent 12 years active duty in the United States Army, is now a disabled veteran but continues to work on Ft Hood supporting the mission. You know, for assholes that claim they support the troops you seem like just another one glad to use their dead bodies as a soap box and nothing more.

It depends... even some of the families will just sell everything off and decide to repurchase at the next duty station. It happens, it's not uncommon because they don't want to wait for the stuff to ship. Single soldiers... even more so. This is not uncommon. Like I said... go to craig's list right around a deployment. Click Texas and then Killeen Copperas Cove and look. You will see **Everything Must Go* sales all over the place.

Rachel, my dear friend, this is why I love you.  Well, okay this is one of many reasons.  You are 1000% right in everything you said, and more.  I watched this madness yesterday, totally unable to believe my eyes.  How can it possibly be that the United States Army requires the local police SWAT team to subdue an armed aggressor in their midst?  It is mind boggling.  How can it possibly be that the authorities were giving multiple statements ever single hour for FIVE HOURS or more before anybody noticed the shooter was not in fact dead?  What, they had a sheet over his corpse and someone walking by happened to notice he was breathing??

This whole situation raises gigantic questions about security at US military bases, and we can only assume those questions are being addressed as we speak.  But there are long-term questions that are being very carefully ignored by the media.  How did a Muslim so free with his opinions get promoted to the position that lunatic held?  How long will America permit the crazy Liberals to make us intentionally stupid when it comes to terrorists?  How much longer will we pretend that Muslims are not more likely than others to kill a crapload of innocent people?  How long are we going to pretend that this politically correct imbecility is acceptable?

I know how you feel on a lot of this. I know you don't want explanations but they are necessary.
As an event unfolds (like 9/11) a lot of initial reports are wrong. So having to correct information as it comes in is "normal". If no report is given until all the facts are in, there would be virtually no reports. Besides, news outlets compete to get the info out first. They gave up ensuring it's accuracy years ago.
It's one thing to be shot at in a war zone and quite another when it happens at "home". So for people to be taken off guard is understandable. Imagine someone attacking you in your bunker, they are in your space, it affects you.
Military bases are a large part of the local community and as such, local law enforcement are granted access to the base (kind of like the Sheriff's Deputies can go inside city limits to do their job, the city is in the county. In this case, the base is in the city). Many of the day to day stuff is taken care of by civilians so the soldiers can do their job of soldiering.
Military promotions are done by test, so being recently promoted doesn't really mean anything significant in this case. Only that he did well on a test and scored enough points on the test and for time in service and time in grade to get promoted. But yes, somewhere someone dropped the ball on him. Most likely because it would have been "wrong" to question a person simply because they are a Muslim....
As for trusting the military, by default I do. But I also know that their Commander in Chief is a civilian. And he has proven time and time again that he is ineptly unqualified to do his job and that he cares little for the military. In this I hold the people who voted for this bastard responsible for what happened.
As you know, Obama stated that if the political tide turned against Islam, he would stand firm with the Muslims.

Safe as a relative term.
Certainly as we are at war with Islam and all our assets are targets then the bases no longer become "safe" as they would be prime to some individual on the inside circumventing all the security measures and conducting a terrorist attack.

1) I was watching the news because my husband was one of the people on lock down. Between the news and him I had reports coming in non-stop but I could not let anything go out. This blog really pissed me off.

2) Ft Hood is mainly armored Calvary, Aviation and Mechanized Infantry... account for units that are deployed and the fact that so many people were shot in the span of a few seconds and they had to call in support from the surrounding cities and you want to bitch about SWAT??? The FBI was there as were "others" however, that takes time... time people didn't have.

3) It IS fucking traumatic when you are processing to go down range for the umteenth time and you're getting shot at on base. They are human beings, brave as they may be, being caught off guard like that is enough to traumatize anyone.

4) They are not allowed weapons on post unless they are actively taking part in training or on their way out on missions... you made a comment about PTSD, do you know how many civilians live on Ft hood or work there? There are GOOD reasons for this no matter if you like them or not.

5) The soldiers are WHY there were only 12 dead when you had a lunatic with a loaded automatic weapon and a hand gun in a confined space filled with people. They were ripping their uniforms off and tearing them apart in an effort to save lives.

6) We count on Muslims in Iraq and Afghanistan, our troops have begged again and again for us to offer political asylum to their interpreters and their families because without their brave sacrifices many more of our troops would have died in these wars. You want all Muslims out of the military?? Most troops that have a lick of common sense know we need more because they interpret.

7) Those "mistaken" reports... for Pete's sake, does it not occur to ANYONE that CID was with the shooter the entire time and those reports were ONLY corrected AFTER they had questioned the two others and after several other things had been put in play that were not on the news? Do I have to spell out INTENTIONAL?????

This isn't a Muslim issue, this is a punk bitch that didn't want to go down range. Yes, he had a history but he wanted to get busted, he wanted to get caught and no one did it so he took it further. THAT is where the ball was dropped and for as much as I want to blame Obama... this has jack shit to do with him. Yes, parts of the command screwed the pooch, yes, people, even soldiers, run for their lives when they are being shot at and they happen to be UNARMED!!!!! Those watching from abroad... let them think what they will, it's a different story when those same soldiers are armed, let them think we are weak, works to our advantage. What would you have them do??? Stand there and be shot so you could trust them? Fuck you... if you have such issues with the troops that ALL suffered yesterday because we ARE a family then go find a shooter while unarmed and stand brave for me. I guess it's easier for you to trust dead people. The parts of the chain of command that knew and did not follow up on this man should be held accountable but you bashed troops for dodging bullets... what is wrong with you? Do you do a fucking happy dance in your living room when they are killed in action and scream "yes!! I can trust the troops!!"?????? Do you think troops don't fall back when under fire and underarmed? Do you think they WALK while doing it????

There is so much more I want to say to you but I can't even find the words. Good people are dead, families are torn apart. I walk out my door and can't miss th flag at half mast and you want to bitch about this and these... people support you and you're in New York? Take your TV and cram it where the sun don't shine. On behalf of Ft hood and ALL her BRAVE soldiers... go fuck yourself!

Congratulations for being the asshole that set me off. I figured it would have been a liberal but... nope... it YOU who is disappointed more are not dead... what the fuck is wrong with you chicken hawks???

You make some good points except that this is not a MUSLIM thing. This COWARD had made numerous statements to others about suicide bombers being heroes to ISLAM by attacking the people who were attacking ISLAM. So cut it anyway you want he attacked the defenseless Soldiers to avenge his perceived attack on ISLAM by America. He knew that they would be unarmed!!
Also I would like to state that all Military Bases are Federal property and that Local and State police are not allowed on base with out permission of the Military. I will also state that Civilian Security/Police personnel are used to secure Military bases due to lack of Military personnel to do the job. This is due to BUDGET constraints by the Powers that be!

Paula..I am sorry that you were offended by my observations..I realized that some would be. While I respect your emotions and highly respect your service and that of your loved one (and you and most here know that) - questions , in particularly questions about the upper echelon of our military MUST be addressed precisely for the families and our military.
And after the continued revelations of Hasan, the LACK Of military action prior Mr. "Allah Akbur" - it only proves to show that our military MUST immediately begin to question their procedures and indeed their training of those that they are sending to fight overseas. YES, a top to bottom clean out is needed. I am more confident of that now than I was last night.

I am internally destroyed by what this bastard did. There are no words. The enemy... who the fuck would have thought of a Major as the enemy? What he has done, the people he has hurt...; the poor soldiers he counseled and worked with and what THEY must feel and be going through. I am sick over it all. I just can't bare to see the soldiers that were there and dealing with it put down. I can't. It's just the last straw. I have held it together since 1:28 yesterday when I woke up to the call... The kids were only mildly shaken. When it looked like Derek might not be able to come home last night (post was locked down much later than the news reported) my daughter began to cry but I calmed her quickly. I was honest but not brutal and made them feel safe and explained that he was locked away from danger. I sent them to bed before he was released... I was certain there was a sniper left not caught waiting to start pegging people off as they got locked in the line to drive off post. I had good reason to have this suspicion. I just kept calling my husband and saying "wait till most leave and then get out quickly." My imagination is too graphic and yesterday sucked. But, I kept the kids calm and ok. I did the mommy thing, I can fall apart later...

I remember coming home from the store, prior to homeschooling my son. He was in preschool. As I drove by the school there was a big crowd then I noticed the hazmat crew on the school grounds. For 3 hours they would not tell us anything nor let us on campus. I know the mommy feeling.

I am sure you know more than the average person being so close. Just know that we on this side of the situation suspect there is more. 'nuf said.

Just keep being a good mom and wife.  I am glad, inspite of the little ones being scared they are okay.

I bet you were never so glad to see someone as when Derek walked thru that door.

I am going to put a blog up for your kids. It will dazzle them and take their minds off of things for a few minutes at least. Might work for you too.

Take care.

I am so very sorry that you have had to deal with this horror. No one, especially on a military base should ever  have to! That is precisely my point Paula. You sadness and shock is almost palpable and it saddens me even more that I had to write what I did. I am not accusing our men and women, our fighting men and women of dereliction of duty in any way at all - but (as the story unfolds moment by moment) I am damn well accusing our command structure, our civilian and Pentagon command structure for their LACK of leadership, focus of training and true of purpose. It was demonstrated yesterday in so many ways..and I am sorry that it took such a horror to see that our US military is becoming infiltrated and has been by the very well meaning well intentioned 'goals' of UN-centric nonsense.

It is so shocking to see that it was a MAJOR in the US army that did this..but as you see a Major, I see the true face of the enemy within and we have tried ALL OF US to tell others that the culture of the civilian command and within this nation have allowed such an event to take place.

We of course are always, always praying for our military..and supporting them..but also we will always scream fire when we see blazes..this is one of those times.

I am sorry I snapped at you Rachel, this is hard. I am still shaken and I still haven't even had time to process it all. I turned off the news shortly after my husband got home late last night and refused to look again today. I couldn't, wouldn't do it to myself again.

Yes, there are problems, yes they need to be fixed, we disagree on what some of them are but I do understand... we have our questions down here but our grief and fear have to subside first. I hope you can understand that. On 9/11 I stood watching the sky... waiting, I was certain they would attack Hood. It just made sense and it never happened and I was grateful. On November 5th it came home... to my home... to where people ran past my husband trying to take cover. I couldn't let 30 minutes go by without having him on the cell. I wanted to run, to get to him, to hold him and I couldn't. I couldn't do anything but sit here and wait. My kids were hours late getting home yesterday and I could only wait. I don't do helpless... it's not my style. But what else is there for us HERE to feel right now? Maybe you can be objective, I;m just not there yet but that's not your fault and I shouldn't have taken it out on you. I apologize.
