Buttercup is de naam van een honky tonk-groep uit Richmond, Virginia die samengesteld is uit twee toffe dames zijnde de zussen Cassandra Cossitt en Octavia Carpin, een violist Mike Tighe, een leadgitarist John Hanor en een drummer David Stover. Zelf zeggen ze dat ze "drink, cheat and cry"-muziek uit de oude doos brengen die zijn oorsprong vindt in de hillbilly-sound van de jaren 40,50 en 60. De veertien nummers op "Evil For You" zijn een mix van covers van dergelijke klassiekers en eigenhandig geschreven liedjes. De countrymuziek primeert in deze liedjes die zowel uit vrolijke deuntjes als uit emotievolle ballades bestaan. De groep vindt dat zij veel eerlijkere muziek brengen dan de sterk gecommercialiseerde en onechte Nashville-countrymuziek die dezer dagen op de countryliefhebbers wordt losgelaten. "Patsy Cline meets Tom Waits" is een andere omschrijving die ik ergens op de elektronische snelweg heb teruggevonden. Zoals elke countryband heeft ook Buttercup hun murder ballad geschreven via het nummer "The Ballad Of Katie Gallows". De titeltrack "Evil For You" is een rasecht honky tonk lied dat gesmaakt kan worden door alle country-linedansers. Son Of The Pioneers-lid Tim Spencer schreef het meezingnummer "Don Juan" ("he's a gentleman from Mexico, he's a mucho playing Romeo"), een echte funsong en voor mij ook het beste nummer op deze plaat, samen met de schitterende cover van de Kitty Wells-countryklassieker "Makin' Believe", een nummer dat we ook kennen in andere versies van Emmylou Harris en Roy Orbison. "Evil For You" van Buttercup is een plaat die je ofwel niets vindt of geweldig vindt omdat je een liefhebber van dit genre bent. Ik kan me er in ieder geval fijn mee amuseren. En ik hoop van u hetzelfde.
