CJ Boyd’s bass playing melts glaciers, creating a sea of low, flowing rhythms, while also supplying melodies that soar over the ocean to dizzy the sun in its path.
Waves of bass loops are garnished with harmonica drones and constant improvisational exploration. Deep-sea-diving for the hungry and alone. While certainly following in the footstep of great bassists like Mingus and Meyer, Boyd’s aesthetic sensibility also seeks to wed the minimalism of Reich and Riley with what might be called the maximalism of Beethoven's chamber music. Add some Moondog, Authur Russell, Godspeed, Eluvium. But with the improvisational prowess culled from jazz. JOE STRAUB is a composer, musician and artist living and working in the San Francisco bay area. His music is engaging, emotional and socially aware. His work evokes an often melancholy, but always inspiring mood that leaves his audience in awe. Starting *THURSDAY, 17. September @ 9 p.m. in Schokoladen :: with JONQUIL (UK) + DEAR EUPHORIA (Swe) + PINK MOTH (Can)JONQUIL formed from the ashes of many teenage bands who never really made it out of Oxford. Lions is the sound of a band not so much finding their feet as striding headlong into something great. Much of this record is made up of grand glorious songs; anthemic and timeless in the best possible sense. These tracks are mirrored by tender, subtle and intimate moments; woozy late-night dreamlike passages. Having been asked to play with the likes of A Silver Mt. Zion, Lightspeed Champion, Spoon and many more in the last few years. In November of last year Jonquil were featured as the weekly ‘Take Away Show’ on La Blogotheque, a popular French blog. PINK MOTH is a new project centered around its main creative force, singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist RAY CAMMAERT. After years of touring and making critically acclaimed records as a key member of Maps of the Night Sky, new material written in solitude indicated a different approach was necessary. The result is an intimate and honest presentation of the evolution of a songwriter and his craft. Recorded at the band's own Tinshop Studios and mixed by Andy Magoffin (Great Lake Swimmers, Constantines, Jim Guthrie) at his House of Miracles studio, this collection of songs is a melancholic, minimalist affair. Tempos shift and dynamics play beneath a dark, stream-of-concious narrative, ever-expansive in it's imagery and breadth, but it is the deft use of saw, organ, french horn, and violin that give these defiant hymnals their eerie, twilight quality.

KIRA KIRA:: Monster Olympics is a twisting, sometimes terrifying, often glorious and touching kaleidoscope of a record. Swarms of fragmented voices mouth melodies through home made microphones while contact-mic’ed Kalimba’s fight for breath in seas of beautifully damaged technicolour, granulated shotgun beats fire from sniper positions in foreboding atmospheres- AND YET armies of glockenspiels, brass and casio’s remind us that everything will, in fact, be ok- As a founding member of Icelandic art collective Kitchen Motors, audio/visual artist Kira Kira has been a pivotal figure in contemporary Icelandic music. She has composed music extensively for theatre, dance and film and created a myriad of sound and video installations everywhere from Beijing to New York. Taking a particular interest in blurring the lines of visual and performing arts Kira has appeared in all kinds of curious venues; in church towers, gallery spaces, abandoned prisons, croatian breweries and various other curious places, creating lasting images of singing black holes, dueling smoke machines, kite symphonies and exploding cassette tapes across the globe.
