Have you ever watched someone grow??
I HAVE!!!
This is a pre-myspace story!!!!
It was a typical day in the factory I was unfortunately employed at when I met him. He would pretty much stay to himself, only to briefly interject into others conversations. I could tell he had something to say, but just didn't have the nerve to let a soul know what was on his mind.
At first I noticed we shared a common interest in music, on a listening level that is. We spoke about the different artists and songs we enjoyed as well as those we felt didn't belong in the spot they filled. At that time he was unaware of my dreaming dedication to my craft, when I made a small comment about my music. Wondering if I freestyled, he asked me if I could "spit" him a little something. Put on the spot in front of our co-workers, I dripped about 8 bars off of my tounge before I stopped. He smirked and told me he used to write a little in high-school, but never took it serious.
Being the promoter I am, and not the type to let open ears go by without feeding them a bit of any of my creations, I invited him over to have a listen, and see what I was working with. Knowing that he had written in his past, and I was looking for someone to work with myself, I also wanted to see if I could spark his interest into picking the pen back up. It didn't take much. I suppose my freestyle at work had inspired him, and he had already began writing a little something before he arrived.
As always with any person who wants to enter the venture with me, I let him know this is a job, and if you aren't ready to commit then it's not for you, and I don't want to waste my time anyway. (ASK HIM AND HE'LL TELL YOU THIS IS SOMETHING I STRESS, even my kids would tell you this)
He quitely uttered his composition and then awaited my response. Expecting a good or bad opinion, I gave him nothing of the sort, instead I just told him to keep going. Now he no longer recites under his breath and he has filled up many notebooks as well as completed a variety of tracks of which he emphasizes the lyrics confidently.
He has grown from a small time writer to a full-blooded emcee.
His name is Anawhym, you can find out how ready he is at www.myspace.com/anawhym
