THANKS TO ARTHUR BAKER FOR MUCH OF THIS INFO:)
his favorite track is "dirty talk" by Klein and mbo

Arthur baker basicaly invented "freestyle music" or "latin hip hop" which exists to this day, mostly among latin people. one ground breaking track baker made was called "I. O. U." by Freez. it had alot of sampling of vocals, played on what sounds like an emu emulator keyboard sampler. this was known as the vocal sample solo where the producer plays samples of voice notes and does a keyboard solo using voice samples. it became popular in freestyle music. one thing I LOVE about freestyle music is the sped up vocals. to get the singer to hit higher notes, the tape machine would slow down, and they would perform the vocal. next they would play the tape machine at normal speed, and bingo, the voice is much higher. not like a chipmunk, but somewhere in between. this is what JELLY BEAN benitez did to produce early madonna. a GREAT freestyle track is "honey to a bee" by Tina B. this track has the vocals REALLY high. a popular club to hear freestyle in the 1980's was the Funhouse. also, there were some tape "edit" genius's called the LATIN RASCALS. they worked on all of the hottest music, and would cut tape in order to make the jagged stutters in 80's music. I think there was a freestyle track I like by heaven 17 or something. some other artists I like are trinere, debbie deb, cover girls in 1989. and I also love "silent morning" by Noel.

that's all for now folks!

best,

-r KG!

Great read! Arthur Baker is a rythmical genius; I was listening to "Looking for the Perfect Beat" a few days ago and I was floored by how dope it is in its complexity. So many current tracks play off this cut it isn't even funny; DJ Khaled and LL both sampled it but the original is still the best.

Thanks for the schooling, KG!
You took me back to 1982 when I saw Afrika Bambata and SoulSonic Force open for Black Uhuru at the old Palladium (now an NYU Dorm). It was an unforgettable experience for me. I was 17, just out of high school. They performed all the hits, "Looking for the perfect Beat". Bambata played a "beat box" solo. They (Bambata+four) hit the stage dressed in olive green fatigues complete with hats, boots and HOLSTERS! We wondered if they were really packin' guns in those holsters. Yours Truly, mikeymiddles

It's moments like these that make me appreciate the Internet.  Even though we've discussed the history of this while chatting online KG, it’s nice to know that a subject now remains for everyone to see.  This is a chapter in NY music that VH1 & MTV often neglects.

Everyone knows Bam, but rarely know who Arthur Baker is.  It's almost like when people assume that Russell Simmons started Def Jam on his own, most "hip hoppers" in my area seem to think that, but then scratch their heads when Rick Rubin appears in Jay-Z's "99 Problems" but yet every Slayer fan knows what’s up.

I haven't gotten a chance to hear Baker's CD from 2003 "Breakin' " on Perfecto records... the line up seems decent...has anyone own it or heard it?  Just curious.

Latin Freestyle, I'm sure it will have its comeback. There were two different forms based on two specific US cities. We had the NYC Latin Freestyle, as well as, Miami Freestyle. A lot of Krafwerk style influences in the backing drumtracks. Also, don't forget Sweet Sensation and Expose.
