Those of you under 21 - we love you.  We want to keep providing music and entertainment for you.  We want you to have a cool place to go.

But DO NOT try to sneak in after 9.  Do not try to 'push the envelope' and hang out after 9.  DO NOT try to sneak alcohol in or come in already drunk.  You are going to ruin it for every other kid in town.  And those of you kids that are abiding by the rules - THANK YOU - from the bottom of my heart.  I am putting it upon you to help us police this so YOU don't lose your hangout.

What prompted this blog?  I just received a complaint from the City Council regarding the compliance checks the Des Moines police department did recently.  Somehow, I don't know how, a minor snuck into the bar that night.  We had a door person so I'm not sure if he had a fake ID or how he managed to get in.

Our complaint reads - WHEREFORE, the City of Des Moines seeks a finding of a violation of the Iowa Code section 123.49(2)(j) and a civil penalty of $500.

That's right.  WE pay $500 for this jerk to sneak into our bar after 9.  If it happened again, we could have our liquor license revoked.  If that happens - WE CLOSE, KIDS.  We will not be open for all ages shows if we have no liquor license because we cannot pay the staff and the utilities on what we make off pop, water and french fries.  We have all ages shows as a service to the under 21 crowd.  We LOVE doing it.  We want to continue doing it.  But if we have to go to 21+ at all times so we don't lose our liquor license, - WE WILL.

Thanks for helping us with this problem.  It's unfortunate that we lose even when we always try to play by the rules.  We do our absolute best to comply with all laws.  We try to be good people and make sure everyone's safe.  We want to continue.  Thank you for helping us to do just that.

Mrs. Ruemmele To You!

oh.. but it makes them so freakin' cool to say "hey I was in the bar when I wasn't supposed to be... "  Or " haha... look what I snuck in.. I got my own booze... hahaha.. I'm so fuckin' cool"

This is my major issue with minors... No freakin' respect!  I've been known to call out 'minors'  before for being in the bar underaged.. I have no tolerance for it.. THEY have NO respect!!! They look out for themselves and that's it.  They don't care about the implications that may come from their actions.

*sighs*  Sorry you guys have to deal with this bullshit!

We need to be careful not to blame ALL minors for the fault of a few. Most of the minors that come to shows are not a problem. They are respectful and leave when they are told... if not a bit slowly. ;)

I love being able to come down to a show, and bring my teenager. It gives us a chance to hang out together, and we have a good time at the HOB. I do not want to see this ruined, because live music is important. I love the kids at the HOB, and the staff is fantastic.

I hope you do not mind if I repost some of this blog as a bulletin, because the more people who know what happened, the more chance the kids will be able to help take care of it.

I will still come down for 21+ shows. But, I will have to find something else to do with my kid, and it is hard to find a place that compares.

It doesn't say how much he paid.  His court appearance that they attached to our complaint shows a "Guilty - Negotiated/Voluntary Plea".  It does state that he was fined but not how much.  And by the way- he is banned for life.

I have only been in a few times and I loved it there but I saw people going in and out the back door that I don't think were minors but maybe someone should lock the door or watch it between bands.

Now you know why some of us like playing in Ames and Cedar Falls. At least 18 year olds can go there. Des Moines just does what it can to removed whats called "Night Life". Why do callege towns have different rules?

Wow. I forget that I was 20 once and I thought I knew it all. I guess I just wasn't such a huge asshole about it. Much to learn Joel, much to learn.

It seems funny to me that minors can't be in HOB after 9 because somebody's worried they might drink, but they can go to shows at the Val-Air where it is way too easy to have someone buy you a beer and give it to you in the cover of the crowd on the floor. I've seen minors drinking at Wells fargo too. These places serve booze, but minors can be in those places after 9. That's bullshit! they need to lower the drinking age to 16 and legalize pot so we can smoke it right in the bar with the cigarette smokers.
