Hi Friends, I'm starting a concert series this October and the focus is on Old-Time (and related) and singer-songwriter artists. I feel there is a need for a reliable Old-Time venue in this area. This is the reason behind the creation of Broken Records Concert Series. Concerts are once a month and usually on Wednesdays from 7-9:30 PM. Concerts will run Oct-April each year. Location is the Hanover Arts & Activities Center in Ashland VA. Some of you have attended Bluemont concerts on the front lawn of this facility. Inside is a great listening room with very live acoustics. The building dates from 1858 and began life as First Baptist Church of Ashland. It's mission since 1967 is community outreach for the arts. Snacks, coffee and tea are gratis/donations and soft drinks or juice will be at cost. There will be an intermission where artists will have a chance to mingle and sell their merchandise to those interested. I encourage you to purchase directly from the artist as this is much more helpful for them than online or store purchases. It is my sincere intent to provide high quality music in a listening room atmosphere where the sound is live and natural. The primary seating is 200 with overflow of 70 and so this may be something akin to a very large house concert. Ticket prices will be held to reasonable rates generally between $10 and $15 per person. All ticket sales will be at the door. At some point I may offer online sales but I prefer not to. Doors open at about 6:15 and all seats are first come / first serve. Becky Taylor & Open Fire will serve as house band and will provide short warm up sets when needed and be available either as a group or as individuals to solo artists for accompaniment. I look forward to seeing you at the shows. Jan, Feb, Mar & April will be announced soon as negotiations are still underway. March is set for Wil Maring and Robert Bowling. I'll announce these shows later in the fall. peace and good pickin Becky Taylor Our first guest is Adam Hurt on October 15, 2008. (see flier below) For those of you who are not familiar with Adam, he is a premier banjo stylist. 'Melodic Clawhammer' is a description that has been applied and I think accurately. Adam has a passion for presenting the musicality of a piece. He researches tunes very thoroughly and his arrangements bring out the spirit of a piece with all its strengths and nuances intact. Adam brings with him a long list of awards and credits compiled in a rather short time-frame. Please check his website for more background. I have been pleased to session with him twice this year, once at Cifftop where he judged and once at Rockbridge Music & Dance. We hit it off great and we are both very enthused about the fine music we will be bringing you in this first concert. Our second guest is scheduled to be Aaron Burdett on Nov 19, 2008. Aaron is from the Asheville NC area. He is a singer-songwriter with a variety of musical influences. Although based in acoustic folk, Aaron Burdett's expansive sound speaks to much wider influences, creating a bridge between the old and the new to create a style all his own. Exploring modern sounds, but always bringing along the time tested traditions of song-craft and presentation, he has charmed audiences from the Carolinas to California, carrying his heartfelt acoustic tone all the way across the Atlantic to Ireland. He has been honored as a finalist in many songwriting competitions, including the Hank Williams Songwriting Contest and the North Carolina Songwriter's Cooperative Song Contest. Aaron has shared the stage or bill with: Acoustic syndicate, The Avett Brothers, A.V.A.S., Guy Davis, Keller Williams, The Larry Keel Experience, Lazybirds, Mad Tea Party, Marshall Tucker Band, Matt Rue, Morning Glory Band, Old Crow Medicine Show, Papa Gumbo, Pond Farm Pickers, Sassagrass, Snake Oil Medicine Show, and many more... Our Third guest is scheduled to be Danny Knicely on Dec 17, 2008. <http://www.myspace.com/dannyknicely> He has recorded and toured nationally and internationally with many groups including the award winning Magraw Gap, David Via and Corn Tornado, James Leva and Purgatory Mountain, and is a musical director for the Mountain Music Project and Footworks Percussive Dance Ensemble, featuring Mark Schatz and Eileen Carson. Danny has also performed with Leftover Salmon, Keller Williams, Vassar Clements, Tony Rice, Mac Wisemen, Tim O'Brian, Michelle Shocked, Sam Bush, Col. Bruce Hampton, Larry Keel, Robin and Linda Williams, Daryl Anger, Jeff Coffin, and Adrian Bellew to name a few. I will accompany Danny on clawhammer banjo and perhaps a bit of three-finger as part of a four piece band. Don't miss this dynamic music from Danny.
