Current mood:  drunk
I played a gig last week at the Slaughtered Lamb in Clerkenwell as part of an Electroacoustic night, and some fella wrote a review on the evening and all the acts and this is the bit he wrote about me:

"Jono McCleary opened with a Rufus Wainwright number and then moved on to his own, rather intense, material. It is hard to define and harder to see as commercial, but, having said that, he certainly pleased me and the audience. Give him a listen, but be prepared to concentrate."

Weird ! So you pleased the reviewer, and the audience, and rewarded their concentration.
Is that not the whole point of the excercise ?

So, conversely, commerciality is something that requires no concentration and displeases the audience? Yeah....sounds about right to me !

Keep on being indefinable, Jono !

don't you love backhanded compliments? compliments that don't really FEEL like compliments until you dissect them? like, "Jono, you are so consistently above-average!"? (well, it's true.)

I found this written by the same chap.

"I have mentioned recently how artists can grow on you after a second listen, and it’s happened again with Jono McCleery, a singer/songwriter in the folk/jazz style who I reviewed at this very venue last October. He had an excellent cello player called Rosie with him this time and I don’t know if that made a difference, but I really enjoyed his set. Last time I found his material a little heavy and inaccessible, this time I loved the way his gentle songs took on a jazz edge without losing the original concept. “Soldier In The Sound” was an excellent example of this and “Stream” and “Inhale” just added to my complete enjoyment of the whole set. He is on www.myspace.com/jonomcleery, so go there soon."
