Fourty-Four Caliber review of "The Mattress Tells No Lies">>> [http://www.ptjsm.karoo.net/44caliber/main.htm]
KODIAK BEAR REGIMENT put most bands to shame, for while many of their peers absorb themselves in mediocrity in a bid to get their faces on front covers, this New Jersey quintet do the exact opposite. Their collision of jagged, do-or-die experimentalism and nail-bitingly precise death metal is truly kaleidoscopic, bordering on the downright insane. Were you to take Converge's gruff, forward-thinking hardcore and marry it to The Blood Brothers' off-kilter dynamism, you'd be somewhere near. Things are rarely less than suffocatingly intense, with blast beats, ten ton riffs, chunky breakdowns and grating vocals playing their part, though the occasional burst of ambience offers light at the end of a very long, very dark tunnel. True, this kind of steely mash-up won't do much for those that like to attach a neat little genre to everything, but even those spoilsports would have to applaud these kids for having the temerity to try something new.
