“Turn right in 2 tenths of a mile,” the soothing but somewhat metallic woman’s voice tells me. Then, “Turn right.”

I turn right and all of a sudden the woman’s voice isn’t so soothing, “Recalculating!” she growls at me.

B-but, I did exactly what she told me to do! She then tells me to take the next 3 rights until I’m back on the road where I started. Then she tells me, “Turn right in 2 tenths of a mile.” Oh-oh.  Déjà vu. “Turn right…Recalculating!”

I’ve entered the GPS Twilight Zone, the only thing missing is Rod Serling’s voice telling me when to turn instead of the metallic woman’s voice.

There’s only one solution when the GPS system turns on you, so I did what any modern man living in the 21st Century would do, I stopped and asked a man working in his yard for directions. The GPS system was close, if only instead of the right it had told me to take an earlier left… *sigh*

So Nancy and I are now on the correct road, but Rosie -- that’s what we call her -- is having none of it. “Recalculating…Recalculating…Recalculating…” Over and over every 10 seconds like a broker record. She’s not telling me to turn, she just keeps recalculating.

“What’s wrong with Rosie?” I ask. “She’s never been this pissed-off before.”

Nancy is looking at the screen in wonder. “According to the GPS we’re not on a road, we’re driving through a field.”

That was $350 dollars well spent.

    *Sigh*

Actually, I would pay extra if I could have the voice of Rod Serling on my GPS: “You're traveling through another dimension -- a dimension not only of sight and sound but of mind. A journey into a wondrous land whose boundaries are that of imagination. That's a signpost up ahead: your next stop: …Recalculating!”

luckly your gps is not part of yoru car radio because it would inteurpt the music none stop with directions, some gps's are better then others when they first came out they were horrible, and the voice annoys me on some models

My dad got himself a hand held GPS system but he didn't keep it very long. I'm putting off getting one until I'm sure I can get one in English with metric measurements. I am so into metric that I have a flash-drive full of e-books to edit and recalculate the measurements in them and over write the ASMs. (American Standard Measurements).

I suspect they have them that do metric and just about any language you can think of.

I have one.  I use it in my travels.  I am in a town I have never been before and looking for a restaurant it does its job.  A buddy of mine has a tom tom that sends him off on adventures all the time.

My dad has one and he keeps trying to give it a psycotic episode by not doing what it says.  He always says he knows a shortcut and goes a different way. It still says Recalculating, but now it sounds shaky and stutters.

My sounds that way and I'm not trying to shake it up! It manages to screw up quite nicely on its own.

That is funny. It seems that new roads have been installed since Rosie last had a map update. :D

Yup! And now they say it's cheaper to buy a new one rather than pay for the updates...The prices have come way down.

It frightens me how we have humanized technology to the point of socialization.

I know how you feel Pink thing (that's what i call my gps cause i hate the fact that it is pink) will tell me to turn and just as i do it's yells at me recalculating when I did exactly what it told me to do. And according to pink thing, Dix Hills does not exist (A town on Long Island for those who don't know) isn't technology just wonderful.

I think we all have a love hate relationship with our nav system. I have named mine Nancy and she has a british accent. One day I was very low on gas so I looked up gas stations in the local area and Mobil came up. I chose the Mobil station and on my way I went.  Too bad it brought me to a mobil home park instead of a Mobil gas station.  I almost ran out of gas and Nancy was almost thrown out the window :)

Our Gps is named Victoria because she sounds like Victoria Osteen to my son.

And Victoria didn't know newly populated areas until we plugged her in online and updated her.

I'm not sure where the name Rosie came from, I'll have to ask Samantha, she probably knows...or maybe Nancy named her. We haven't locked Rosie in the glove compartment yet, but she might get banned to the back seat.
