It's been three years since Beat Soler, also known as SEELENLUFT, released his previous album, The Way We Go, and that's the exact amount of time he worked on his new album Birds And Plants And Rocks And Things. Birds And... is his most ambitious album to date, exceeding the internationally recorded and produced Out Of The Woods, the 2002 album which includes the mega hit "Manila".
Beat's move from Zurich to Berlin for love was certainly inspiration for the new work. Another important factor was his move from Klein Records to Gigolo Records; the two independent legendary record labels that previously released the single to the album, a cover of the America ballad "Horse With No Name." And so now we have Birds And... just freshly minted and its right to say that it is his most complete album to date. The thirteen new songs on Birds And... make that characteristic SEELENLUFT sound even more tangible.
Beat Soler has always had something special – whether it be conducting his hard disc orchestra as Silvercity-Bob, writing music for synchronized swimming groups, creating a style of homogenized eclecticism or crossing over to the electro-pop club scene.
A SEELENLUFT track is recognizable in every song cluster not because it relies on cheap trademark gimmicks, but because it has something that a lot of songs are missing: SOUL.
Beat Soler sings on Birds And Plants And Rocks And Things ("Comme Dans Un Rêve") as does the enchanting Julie Lee, a Dane raised in France. Most of the vocal work however is clearly performed by Florian Horwath, the vocalist on the hit "Horse With No Name". Florian's charisma pendulates from a nonchalant disco attitude to emotional exuberance to most of all, huge devotion to his art - its a heavenly match for the Seelenluft world of sound. Florian's solo album, Sleepyhead will soon be released by Roof Music.
Written, performed and produced by Mr. SEELENLUFT himself, this sound cosmopolitan's fifth album which goes from the psychedelic to the contemplative combines his usual harmonious style classic pop structures with lo-fi electro, chanson, and disco.
Not as club based as his last album, The Way We Go, and more focused than the album before that, Out Of The Woods, SEELENLUFT presents himself as a mature but fresh, experienced song and sound aesthete who is experienced but not as a know-it-all. You might suspect a Renaissance man behind the album; someone who doesn't just master his music machines but understands them. And someone who can, above all, write songs so touching that you don't know whether to cry or laugh because every melancholy moment has that ray of sunlight that makes everything all right again.
And vice versa, the uplifting moments have their shadows. Birds And … has humor in the dark parts and shows the other side of the coin. Beat Soler shows us that he's further developed his own musical language.
With its variety constantly creating a homogenous effect, Birds And Plants And Rocks And Things is a masterpiece of discipline, a dance album for shoe-gazers, the living room soundtrack for club heads, the rock album for IDMers and the electro album for Sonic Youth and My Bloody Valentine fans.
Beat Soler will soon be performing Birds And Plants And Rocks And Things live with a band.
