That's the planned opening night and spot for the 80th Annual Feast of St. Rocco, a 3-day event featuring food, music, and games to celebrate the city's Italian-American heritage. All residents are invited to attend the festivities along the street.
"We have a huge entertainment (schedule) this year, because it's our 80th anniversary," said Joyce Mover, a feast organizer. "Nothing lasts for 80 years anymore."
The bill includes performances from the New Life Band; Preacher Jack; Bobby Valli; Charlie Thomas and the Drifters; and Pat Benti and the Code 51 Band.
Other events include a procession led by the statue of St. Rocco on Friday, another procession on Sunday, and a $5,000 raffle, which has a limited number of tickets. Eating beforehand is strongly discouraged.
"We have great, homemade Italian food," Mover said. "We still make our own homemade Italian specialties."
The feast is organized by the St. Rocco Society. Steven Ultrino, society president, said in a written statement that this year's event should attract revelers of all stripes.
"Although it is a neighborhood event, people from all over attend the feast which has become a great weekend for all to enjoy," he said.
Proceeds from the event benefit the society's scholarship fund for graduating seniors at public and parochial high schools in Malden.
Mover, a 25-year resident of Malden now living in Stoneham, said the event helps many city residents connect to their past.
"It means a lot to us, because you know your grandfather was there, somebody;s uncle was involved," Mover said. "It has a lot of pleasant memories. I hope Pearl Street will be packed."
The Feast of St. Rocco is scheduled for Friday, Aug. 7 and Saturday Aug. 8 from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m, and Sunday Aug. 9 from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. Anyone interested in purchasing a $5,000 raffle ticket should call 781-438-0803.
