Last year, I walked down the red carpet for the first time as a film composer. OK, OK, it wasn't the academy awards and no it wasn't the AFI awards, but it was the Sydney Film School Awards and the red carpet - yes it was long, it was red and and led into a cinema (for those cynics!), The Palace Academy Cinemas in fact in Paddigton, Sydney.
I was asked to do a composition for Karen Crespo's major/thesis film (she's the gal who does all Mozaika's film stuff) being a graduate student at Sydney Film School. Entitled "Shades of Desire", the music was inspired by the Bach Cello Suites and Frates and tells a story of a girl, a dancer, fighting to find and keep her individuaility and and inspiration as a dancer. It's a dance film largely based on contemporary style dance and the narrative is strongly told through the music and the footage. Thanks to Lucy for playing the cello and Daniel for recording it.
Out of the 61 films, myself and 2 other composers shared the Best Composer Award, with the prize being free membership to the Australian Guild of Screen Composers. Thanks especially to teacher Michael McLennan for feedback and general wisdom.
It'll be up on myspace / Youtube soon.
