So when did it start... For whatever reason I’d been doing the goddamn karaoke thing in the "wine" bar at Sodens, hosted by Greg funnily enough, around the winter of 2006. Around about the same time there was this guy, that is, Johnny, had begun to set up his old iMac in the front bar and playing music that didn’t actually suck. I thought, well, this is a decent change, so I kept turning up. As did other people. After about a month or so the whole thing started snowballing into a real alternative to the tedium of the Dean Street nightlife for nearly two years, not to mention complementing Sodens’ reputation as THE home of live music in town.
Sometimes it’s been down - the one theme that I thought didn’t go down so well was the Clockwork Orange one, where the infamous penis statue scene was playing on the TV as four security guards sat on one rather agitated punter in the middle of what would normally the dance floor, waiting for the cops to turn up, at which point I decided "this is fucking evil", drunk up my MIDDIE of PALE and left.
But mostly it’s been up, some nights people just started piling in until you can’t move to think but at least you can always get a beer (or a water) from the always friendly bar staff and its awesome. And so that’s the way it ended, on a high. There’s some photos up in the gallery, so check them out.
I also caught a rather crappy bit of video from the camera, which
I’ve put up on youtube so you can look at that and be underwhelmed by the bad picture quality.
Fortunately there’s still something that’ll be going down on Saturday nights, although I’m probably going to finally succumb to my relative decrepitude and not go out
nearly as often. But you know, someone’s gotta be the slightly creepy scene grandpa I guess. One of these days I really have to burn that super-exclusive Antlerland demo, give it to Mav (or whatever hot DJ moniker he’s going to give himself now) and see how that goes down.
