When I was 17, the Summer before enrolling at Western Oregon State College, I knew I'd need some dance training before auditioning for the college musicals. There were no adult classes in Salem so I signed up for a standard beginners Jazz / Tap class at the France school of Dance. I was in the zone. I picked up the combinations much quicker than my 6 year old counterparts. Sure, the parents looking through the viewing window must have been jealous of the 6'3" Barishnikov schooling their kindergarten ballerinas. I was all set to show the world my ultimate dancing prowess at the grand finale showcase set to occur on a mainstage at the Oregon State Fair - until I'm hit with the unfortunate news that my dad needs my help that weekend at his shop and he wouldn't take no for an answer. Oh the performance those fair-goers never got to see. In another universe, there is a David Kelley, discovered by an Alvin Ailey talent scout at the Oregon State Fair, gracing the New York City stage, world tours, PBS specials.... *sigh*
