It's all getting interesting over in the United States of the US, with Governor Sarah Palin now on McCain's ticket. This is an extremely shrewd move for several reasons:

Firstly, Palin is young. Very young. At a mere 44, which is barely out of school, she'll have an impressive nostalgia connection with the voting public. It's only a matter of time before she starts a speech with, "Do you remember Dangermouse? Vote for me". This is a massive improvement on McCain's previous campaign slogan of, "Who here remembers The Jazz Singer?"

Now McCain is old. Very old. But if they're on the same ticket, McCain's age takes precedence and they both get to travel for half price. You may think that I'm trivialising the situation there, but it takes a lot of travelling to win an election and this could give the republicans a crucial financial edge over the Obama machine.

Sarah Palin is a woman. This is significant because neither Barack Obama or Joe Biden are even close to being one. Hillary Clinton was once a woman and the people who were going to vote for her for no other reason and don't consider policies, now have another woman to back.

But what kind of policies, and what kind of woman, you ask? Well, an extremely right wing Christian one. The kind that thinks that foetusus have feelings, but homosexuals don't. This is of course drivel, as you'd know if you, like me have ever watched Beaches with a gay man and an embryo. It wasn't first-trimester Johnny who was crying, I can tell you. In fact, his tear ducts hadn't even developed yet.

Palin is very anti-abortion. I have it on fairly good authority that not only does she want to change the law, repealing Roe v Wade, she actually wants to make it retroactive. This would force women who've had abortions to track down the potential father and re-impregnate themselves.

This would be most tricky if the guy has since been imprisoned for rape. You'd better hope that prison allows conjugal visits, you little lawbreaker.

All of this is necessary as, according to The News, kids today use abortion as a contraceptive method. I'm a tad doubtful. I'm also pretty sure no one uses neck surgery as a method of road safety, but if the government won't even tell you about seatbelts in case it encourages driving...

I'll be back in the Land Of The Americans™ at the end of the month. I'm also doing my Edinburgh Festival Show in London, Brighton, and Manchester. Hopefully more places too. All the dates are on my page. Here's me sort of describing it for edfest.tv

I'm also doing another episode of Charm Offensive this week, which is very exciting for me as Armando Iannucci had a hand in roughly half of my favourite comedies ever. http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/comedy to listen online.

I think Paramount is repeating my half-hour special, but I still can't get any information on when it's happening. If you see it, I hope you like it.

And finally, here's me on npr, which is like America's Radio 4, talking about the London Olympics to a brilliant presenter, Robert Siegel, who's very good at making comedians sound like they're not crowbaring in jokes. Thanks to Jeffrey for the link.

Add to all that the fact that this extremely abstinence-only oriented lady has a daughter who is seventeen years old and currently five months pregnant, and you've got yourself a nice little bundle of irony.

"foetusus" just may be the most amazing word I've ever seen typed out in my existence.

Palin and McCain and kiss my ass. I think I might move to England and be a Matt Kirshen groupie if he gets elected. Anyone who is that conservative scares the shit out of me.

Oh... and the guy who got Palin's daughter pregnant, says he is a redneck, who doesn't want kids. Ha!

Funny, I wrote a blog about Palin a couple of nights ago too. Yours is funnier but mine has more pictures and is nicer to look at. Ha.

Good info though. How do other countries view this election? I bet McCain is just another reason tacked on to their lists of how stupid Americans are.

And now this 44 year old right wing chick is going to be a granny because her 17 year old daughter did not practice as her mother preached. How're you supposed to help run a country when you can't control your own kid?!

Least she made Mama proud and didn't abort, right? Oy vey. You can't make this shit up...

All this Alaskan has to say is I'm gonna laugh my ass off when McCain gets elected and dies, making Sarah Palin President...

Sticking up for her, I can say she has done a wonderful job as Governor of AK, so I think she'll do just fine as VP...

And I'm pro choice, pro gay rights, but that's just me.

That was hilarious and I hope you keep it up with these wonderfully apt insights :)

I Could Use A Good Laugh...

That was a very convincing arguement, Matt. And had the Tanzanian taxi driver I had from my flat to Heathrow not already convinced me to vote for Obama, your piece certainly would have.

I have heard that kids are using abortions as contraception, though. They get a frequent users card, and each time they get scraped out they get a little stamp on it, so that when their card is full, they can turn it in for free vaginal reconstructive surgery, or a years supply of stem cells. Your choice.

dude, very witty.

does anyone whose voting for Obama because its "time for a change" now why they're are even voting for him besides the obvious? Everyone talks of this "change", but very few people even know where he stands on many issues. of course they're is going to be change, theres a new president, change does occasionally come with the package. How sad, I can't even vote and i know more about politics than half this country.

Right on Matt,

Sarah loves da babies - if those Republicans get re-elected, and McCain chokes on a pretzel stick, she'll be our President- and when the phone rings at 3:00 am, she'll cover us all with a blanket, drop hot chocolate from helicopters and check under the bed for terrorists.
Yup, I feel safe.

She's one crisis away from looking like Tammy Faye Baker after a good cry. The guy doesn't even want the daughter's baby - they pulled his comments off the internet about not wanting to be a father at 18. And if Bristol's only 16 now, and she's 5 months along, then she was statutory raped?? Right? How can she look like Karen from Will & Grace and be so right wing...it's just visually all wrong, too.

Oh man, I have no idea how to track down aging rock stars from the 70s - I'll never be able to get those guys to re-impregnant me at 53, without beer. (kidding), so I hope your rule doesn't go into affect before I get thru menapause. lol

How embarrassing.

I watched McCain's speech last night, (trust me--I didn't want to, but I only get 3 channels).. and in between dozing off, I was waiting for him to drop dead. Towards the end, when he was going on and on about being a prisoner of war, he was getting so worked up, I was actually worried for him.

I also saw him on The Ellen Show.. which was amusing, because I got the feeling that he, of course, KNEW that she is a lesbian, but blatantly didn't care about offending her. That seemed like a stupid campaign move -- guesting on a show which has a massive crowd that loves lesbians, and round-about saying you think they're less than human.

The whole thing is just painful for me to watch

Oh and on another note, the Reading PA show!! Jon Reep was canceled again!!!!!!!!

Hi Matt, good thing we are blessed by living in country's that allow us to believe what we want and voice our opinions to all without retribution from the government. I'm a christian and absolutely believe that homosexuals have feelings, and I even believe that God loves them just as passionately and fiercely as he loves me! Don't be so quick to judge all Christians when you don't want us to be so quick to judge others. :o)

I wasn't judging all Christians at all. In my blog I specifically targeted 'extremely right wing' ones.

I don't doubt that you, or indeed many other Christians are not homophobic. Some are even gay (including an old school friend of mine who ties himself up in intellectual knots trying to reconcile the book he believes is the truth and the way he genetically is programmed to act).

But Sarah Palin has come out on record as the kind of Christian who is actively prejudiced against gay people and the way they may choose to live their lives. Her beliefs are at least grounded in her Christianity and she uses it to justify her views. And she is in a position where she may be about to be elected to one of the most powerful political posts in the world.

It is indeed a positive thing that she, you and I can believe what we want and voice our opinions without retribution in our respective countries. But with the privilege of voicing our views comes others' privilege to criticise them just as publicly.

And just as you are free to criticise what I wrote, and I welcome that, and I am free to respond to you, we should equally (indeed particularly) be free to criticise the beliefs of the person who is in contention for the Vice Presidency of the USA.

There's a huge difference between believing in things and voicing our opinions, and then acting on those beliefs. Palin may be in a position to act on her beliefs to a level that would impact the whole world. And that scares the hell out of me.

1. talking about politics, (US politics, none the less), and
2. bringing up Palin's religion.
Instead, everyone is being civil. Where is the fun in that? Although, I bet you've gotten some hate mail! haha

I feel as though I should start a heated argument with you, just for the hell of it

Retroactive abortions? thats brilliant, you are the man
Hope to see you out here somewhere soon my friend, Keep it up
BTW it is kind of scary whats going on here. We Americans are not known for our genius and the republican machine is cranking up the fear.
Did you know Obama was educated in a Muslim school, taught to hate whites and jews and secretly plans to destroy the Bible. I got that email Monday
The scary thing is the millions who will believe it
They're on to us, now we black people will have to come up with another plot
