Regarding the Fender Victor Bailey Signature Bass video comments here's the most unusual one.The same guy who thinks "those are not the basses I play" also says he "thinks 70 percent of everything I said is a lie".HUH..WHA'...DUH...!??????????
I just don't get that one.IT'S A PROMO VIDEO FOR MY BASSES!!!WHAT IS THERE TO LIE ABOUT??????1I say the body of the bass is Koa on top, rosewood in the middle, and mahogany on back. What's there to lie about ???I describe the preamp, which is a very simple basic preamp.Bass ,treble and mid controls, nothing fancy. What could possibly be a lie???The pickups are just some regular Fender pickups.Great pickups but the same ones in every other Fender VB bass, nothing unique.I tell a few stories, like how I came to Fender, how I got my first bass from my father, things like that.Which part did he think was a lie? That my father bought me my first bass?Think that's a lie???!!!My whole philosophy, which I've been espousing for thirty years,is that MY sound in not the bass, the pickups, the preamp ,the strings. My sound is ME!I make the bass sound the way I WANT IT TO SOUND.Different woods, strings, pickups etc, give you different sound characteristics (i.e. bright, dark, punchy, midrange, etc) but whatever that may be,when I pick up a bass I make it sound the way I want it to sound. That's the magic of Leo Fender's designs. That you don't need to improve upon them.Diehard Fender guys like myself play them because they're perfect just the way Mr. Fender desgned them 50-60 years ago.Another guy thinks my preamp is different.Where did he get that idea? What could be different. My preamp holds 9 volt batteries like everyone else's.Ya think I got some more powerful 9v's than everyone else?I wish!I'm gonna go out on a limb and speak for ALL cats who have signature instruments and tell you that THERE IS NO DFFERENCE BETWEEN THEIR INSTRUMENTS AND ONE YOU BUY IN A STORE.That's exactly the point.A guys chooses the wood, pickups, preamp, neck, ect that he wants, and what you get at the store is THAT!Maple is maple, rosewood is rosewood, ebony is ebony. What could possible be better about my Koa wood than the Koa on a bass at your local music store? It's exactly the same design.Marcus Miller's bass doesn't sound any better than any other Marcus Bass in the store.MARCUS MILLER might sound better than anyone else you heard playing one,but it ain't the bass, believe me.There's no difference in my basses from any others out there. Most importantly though, when you watch the video ask yourself what that person could POSSIBLY think was a "lie".All you young cats out the forget all this kind of BULLCRAP and just THINK ABOUT MUSIC!Peace

i have something to say to that guy! i have played 2 basses out of the series your signature and your acoustic both of which sound beautiful i mean sure i didn't sound like you,but like you sound its the person playing that makes the sound. i will probably buy both basses i played Your signature electric and acoustic. both very good instruments for me personally i think your acoustic is probably the best acoustic bass ive ever played, very comfortable and smooth. kudos to you victor.

I don't get why people who lack good musician-ship would even call someone like Vic a liar.
maybe he can't get Victor's sound down and thinks otherwise..

Hey Vic! Tell the crew out there that you would sound great on a cigar box with rubber bands. Maybe a little, Thank You, for designing the bass in the first place! And it is a damn nice bass too!

last year after the concert of Victor at the Blue Note in Milan, Italy

i asked to a guy of Victor team, to take Vic's bass just a minute to feel the weight of this baby...
Well, the bass is a normal Victor Bailey signature except from the fact ( if i'm not wrong ) that this one is the first ever produced , and the Koa top is well chosen and really beatyfully applied.
the difference is just in the HANDS , Obviously Victor can obtain a similar tone on every bass he gets on
hands...

With Respect,

Enrico

You can't be upset. If this guy spent half as much time playing as he does criticizing, he may one day be able to make anything sound good or perhaps not. How does this guy explain the upright players who all sound like themselves or the legion of legends who had something to say and did it
before the advent of modern basses....i.e. Jamerson, Jaco,Paul Jackson,Rocco,Larry Graham,Chuck Rainey....Etc. There is no "magic" bass that will take any of us to that level! you have to feel sorry for someone who blames his tools not his own shortcomings. Michael Jordans Sneakers won't turn me into Paul Pierce. I doubt this guy even plays if he did would he have anything to say? I hate to say it but fancy wood, multiple strings, active electronics, "ramps", bass tremolos...etc won't give you time, taste or touch-let alone the ability to improvise over changes or write music. The sound is in your hands and the music is in your mind.
God Bless,
Tony

Hey VicB!! Jross here!!! I have the Fender accoustic signature series that you endorse.......
My question is: WHO CARES!!! Get what you like and what you want your sound to be and handle your business. To try and distract from your career and music is just player hating....One thing!! On Marcus's Fender Signature I believe he swapped out for Sadowsky preamps?

A bass is a instrument of choice used to express a musician's emotion musically, "A VOICE for better term."
Victor has spent 30 years learning to speak & what we hear is his 30 year old musical voice, not a 7 year old instrument. I've seen Victor play a red lakeland in the 80's same sound as now, only more defined thru growth. I think people should stop focusing on whats in a players axe & focus on how that player perfected there sound, in that I think people will find what it takes to be a MUSICIAN. Yeah Victor has accomplished a lot of things & hats of to him for that, but the goal is to take and build upon what these great players like Victor, M Miller, Alex Al, Jaco, Jimmy Johnson, Nathan East etc have already laid down & take it to new highs. But we can't do that if we're concerned about what pickups they have. Instead spend that time in a positive productive manor creating & perfecting your sound.
Peace.

There's SO much wisdom in what Victor says here! Actually, the man doesn't speak unless he has something worth saying.

I was lucky enough to be at Berklee when Victor was, and even 30 years ago, the "sound" was IN HIS HANDS, not it the instrument. Once his bass was stolen, and for a while he had to make do with whatever someone could lend him, but as tough as that might've been for him, he still came out sounding like Victor B.

The only change has been that time and countless additional hours of playing have made Victor's style that much more his own, and he's developed self-assurance. Positive things, eh? Hand him any bass, and he'd still play with that VB style ... but why should he have to prove that, when he knows what works for him? And he's stated exactly the components that make up his preference.

On a purely subjective note, Victor was always one of the most "real," honest, tell-it-as-it is people I met at Berklee. That's WHO he is, just as what you hear that sounds so great is HIS ART. Everything I've read on his MySpace is exactly what the person I knew would have said, and I don't think for one nanosecond that he's changed his ethics.

No instrument magically gives anyone better chops; doesn't happen.

Peace ...
Jules

Victor, you don't have to explain anything to anybody! Where's THAT guy's signature bass?? Who did HE play with?
