It is with heavy heart that I have to inform you that Mr. Wesley "Junebug" Jefferson has died of complications from cancer. As many of you know, Wesley had been fighting the disease valiantly for more than a year and a half. He was 65.
Wesley was a mainstay of the Clarksdale, Mississippi blues scene for several decades. He was a singer, bass player and bandleader. He worked with such iconic Delta bluesmen as Frank Frost, Sam Carr and James "Super Chikan" Johnson. In recent years, the Wesley Jefferson Southern Soul & Blues Band were staples at such Delta jukes as Red's Lounge, Sarah's Kitchen and the Do Drop Inn.
In 2007, my label Broke & Hungry Records released Meet Me In The Cotton Field, a CD featuring Wesley and Clarksdale guitarist Terry "Big T" Williams. Last year, Wesley appeared in our film M For Mississippi.
He was really one of the unsung figures in the contemporary Delta blues scene. Other artists may have grabbed the headlines, but they didn't come any deeper than Wesley "Junebug" Jefferson. His death leaves a gaping hole in the Mississippi blues scene. I'm really crushed by this news.
I'll report back when I have news about funeral arrangements. I'd imagine there will be some fundraisers organized soon. Please keep Wesley and his family in your thoughts and/or prayers.
Sincerely, Jeff Konkel
