i remember thinking that Sam Cooke's "Chain Gang" was the saddest and most beautiful song in the world as a kid. I couldn't register it emotionally, nor decipher the subject matter, so it just about short-circuited my little feelings processor.
I later learned that the producers, or maybe it was the label, wanted listeners to think he was white, assuming this would widen his appeal.
Cooke to me is one of the most uncanny voices ever. My dad was more into Motown and Chicago soul so I didn't grow up on him, he has always a mystery to me.
That voice carries about 1,000 years of joy and sorrow in it.
