CLUB BOHEMIA MARDI GRAS RETURNS TO SOMERVILLE
On Friday, February 20, 2009, the Club Bohemia Mardi Gras
Masquerade Ball and Zulu Parade of The Golden Blade will return to Somerville
with a lineup of sunup to sundown second liners, including:
The Chicken Slacks (Stax Soul and Funk)
The Confederacy of Dumpsters (New Orleans Party Songs)
The Second Line Social Aide and Pleasure Society Brass Band
(15-piece Mardi Gras Parade Music)
Preacher Jack (Barrelhouse piano and vocals) and
“The Great Mardi Gras Maggid” Mickey Bliss
(emcee)
For fourteen consecutive years, Mickey Bliss and his
Bohemian cohorts celebrated the Rites of Spring with a bawdy bacchanal at the
Kirkland Café, on Washington Street in Somerville. When the Kirkland closed
last year, the party moved to Ryles, and this year Mickey and his masked crew
find themselves at what they hope to be the new permanent home of the best
Mardi Gras party in town, Johnny D’s in Davis Square. The night promises
to be filled with the sights, sounds and tastes of New Orleans, including the
midnight Zulu Parade, the crowning of the King and Queen of Mardi Gras,
and a menu of Crescent City favorites like catfish, jambalaya, and rice and
beans. So don your silks and sequins, dig out your feather boas and tasseled batons,
dance the Kalinda Da Boom and shake ala gris-gris calimbo. It’s Mardi
Gras! Laissez Les Bons Temps Rouler!
