The ever-elusive record deal: Every artist wants one, and it's pretty tight if the terms are right, but the devil is in the details. I have had some offers, I have tried to negotiate the fine print, and then I hit the wall. Some of these ‘indie’ labels are still operating under the old industry paradigm: screw the artist. Attempts to negotiate are met with the same attitude that the US has with terrorists: ‘we don’t negotiate with terrorists’. And the artist becomes the terrorist. But hey, these labels gotta make a living too right? Yes, but at the expense of us losing our masters, publishing rights, a percentage of merchandise, licensing rights? And worst of all, no guarantee that they will give you their all after you have signed? Or even a minimal effort for that matter! This is what led to the initial development of the indie record label: resistance to such oppression.
Now yes, it is true that the industry is dramatically changing, piracy increases every day, and it’s tougher than ever for anyone to make a living in this game. But is it just for the artist to pay the price for this? Should the artist be the one to find supplementary income or a part-time job while the label thrives on their music? I think not. I’ll keep doing what I’m doing: going it alone, be my own label, be my own boss, destiny in my hands, ruler of my own universe. If you find yourself standing at the crossroads, and the paths are not able to combine into one middle path, then you may be better off taking the longer route of self-reliance.
What do you think?
Best, Metaform
