The ever-elusive record deal: Every artist wants one, and it's pretty tight if the terms are right, but the devil is in the details. I have had some offers, I have tried to negotiate the fine print, and then I hit the wall. Some of these ‘indie’ labels are still operating under the old industry paradigm: screw the artist. Attempts to negotiate are met with the same attitude that the US has with terrorists: ‘we don’t negotiate with terrorists’. And the artist becomes the terrorist. But hey, these labels gotta make a living too right? Yes, but at the expense of us losing our masters, publishing rights, a percentage of merchandise, licensing rights? And worst of all, no guarantee that they will give you their all after you have signed? Or even a minimal effort for that matter! This is what led to the initial development of the indie record label: resistance to such oppression.

Now yes, it is true that the industry is dramatically changing, piracy increases every day, and it’s tougher than ever for anyone to make a living in this game. But is it just for the artist to pay the price for this? Should the artist be the one to find supplementary income or a part-time job while the label thrives on their music? I think not. I’ll keep doing what I’m doing: going it alone, be my own label, be my own boss, destiny in my hands, ruler of my own universe. If you find yourself standing at the crossroads, and the paths are not able to combine into one middle path, then you may be better off taking the longer route of self-reliance.

What do you think?

Best,

Dont give in to those selfish bastards. Screw em'. What exactly do they do in order to make those types of demands? Oh yeah, let you say that you are signed to their label. OK, it may give you a little more recognition with their help in promoting you. But as you have already concluded, its definitely not worth giving up basically everything you are doing in order to live your life the way they tell you to. HA! If they owned anything you have ever or will ever accomplish, then what are you there for? Its really pathetic that the music industry is like that. Stay true to yourself and what you do, cuz what you do is amazing. Im not trying to be your number one fan...I just tell it how it is. Everyone should stay on the path that they are laying for themselves and fuck everyone that tries to interfere. Temptation is a very powerful thing and to decline it is to withhold more strength than you may ever realize you have. INDIE labels are the shit cuz they can put out whatever kind of music they want and not have to worry about some prick behind a desk tellin you what everyone else wants to hear. Seriously, the next label that approaches you and thinks they can own you...photocopy your nuts and send them that as a response. Just keep doin your thing bro. When the right time comes, youll feel it.

The problem with saying no to a label now is that currently your star, while rising, may not always be as high. By giving up one deal, you may be perceived by other labels as 'difficult' and become uninteresting to them.
Don't forget that when you partner up in any relationship, there's compromise involved. It's not a bad thing to give up something for getting something else. For instance, if you have to give up publishing in exchange for tour support, fine. But, attempt to put a time limit on when the masters will revert back to you. Everything is negotiable. Think it through and pull it apart and negotiate until that deal suits both parties.
Personally, I love your stuff and have approached you about a publishing deal in the past, which you turned down. I understand it. But, you may be hurting yourself by carrying this stigma around that 'you give up everything and someone else benefits' attitude. It's just not true.  Working with unknown artists is a daily hair raising seige but, companies like mine are committed to it. I hope you find one for you.
Good luck.
