His key centers are wrong.

Coldplay uses a IV V I vi progression. Satch uses a ii V I vi progression.

By changing key centers, you end up with a very popular chord progression, especially when re-arranged into a I vi ii V progression. Oh, you say ii and IV are different chords? They're both subdominant class chords, interchangeable in theory-ese.

I vi ii V is used in every cheesy 50s love ballad, 4.3 million jazz standards and exercises, and even the most overplayed piano song in the world:


So it all boils down to the fact that Joe Satriani copied "Heart and Soul"
