The essay contemplates the meaning of home and her experiences as an immigrant. The writer, who comes from a line of immigrants, was born in Antigua, West Indies and raised in the US Virgin Islands. She lived in the USA and Liberia, where she married, bore three children and survived several political upheavals. During the Liberian civil war in 1989 her family fled to England, where they were declared refugees in order to have a new start. Her family eventually settled in Switzerland, where they have lived since 1991.
