Many professional 20-somethings say they are experiencing a quarterlife crisis, a period of anxiety and disillusionment accompanying the transition to adulthood. Think midlife crisis, but younger and with different issues. Abby Wilner, co-author of "Quarterlife Crisis" and "Quarterlifer's Companion," coined the phrase in 1997 after she graduated from college, moved back home and couldn't figure out what to do with her life. What makes the crisis unique for 20-somethings today is that it's taking longer to become an adult based on traditional markers such as achieving financial independence and starting a family. The average American now job-hops eight times before the age of 32, the average college graduate accrues $20,000 in education loan debt and the average age to get married is now 27. These young professionals grew up with record-breaking divorces among their baby-boomer parents. They were coming of age when terrorists destroyed New York's Twin Towers, shattering a long-held feeling of security on native shores. They've emerged from the structure of grade school and college to become disillusioned by today's difficult economy with its uncertain job market.
