TRUE STORY

Ever since I started publicly endorsing Senator Obama, I have received note after note from people
(and they all coincidently happened to be white)
telling me that I should think about my choice and not just vote for Obama because he is a man of color. Some have even went to the extent of calling me and my entire race "dumb", "ignorant" & other derogatory terms because of our support for Obama. They feel as if minorities don't have minds enough to make an EDUCATED choice. They feel that we just see a black man so we get behind him like he's the new rapper with the hottest single out or something.

I'm not a racist at all, but these type of things REALLY upset me and make me wonder how far have we really come if they percieve us in that light? I don't know about you but I'm sick of being treated as if I don't have a mind of my own, or being judged by my skintone. The last time I checked, the 60's have been long OVER. I know that evey white person isn't like this, so in fairness I will not generalize them like they do us. I'm only speaking to the one's who have disrespected me, and the one's who feel that all Blacks are "dumb" & "ignorant".

Has a white person ever been accused of "just voting for a President because he's white"? Oh wait, they couldn't have been, because EVERY president since the 1700's has been white. And Blacks weren't even allowed to VOTE until 1965. At least not FAIRLY. If we tried to before then, the Klan would show up at your door.

The Fifteenth Amendment to the Constitution, one of three adopted in response to the American Civil War, prevented any state from denying the right to vote to any male citizen twenty-one years old or older on account of his race. Particularly in the South, however, many practical barriers were erected to this becoming a reality. Most abused was the literacy test. The ability to read and write the English language was not banned as a basis for determining voter eligibility by this amendment and blacks were often denied the right to vote on this basis. Even literate blacks were often told they had "failed" such a test, if in fact, it had even actually been administered. On the other hand, illiterate whites were often allowed to vote through a "Grandfather clause" which waived literacy requirements if one's grandfather had been a qualified voter, which for most blacks in the immediate aftermath of the Civil War was an impossibility. Selective enforcement of the poll tax was frequently also used to disqualify black voters, a fact which led to the eventual adoption of the Twenty-fourth Amendment. Intimidation tactics were employed to bar blacks from voting as well, such as "night rides" by the Ku Klux Klan. Economic tactics such as eviction from rental housing or termination of employment were also used . Such practices did not fully end until the American Civil Rights Movement scored one of its greatest triumphs when it encouraged the passage by the United States Congress of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Now once again I AM NOT RACIST. This is merely me stating FACTS.
And it was brought on by people messaging ME. I wasn't even gonna go there. I was doing quite well supporting my candidate and expressing my opinion when I was was presented with disrespect.
So all I am doing is responding, and defending myself and my race. If we don't defend ourselves, who will? I actually forget about color until somebody reminds me I'm Black. I see us as the HUMAN RACE. When will you?

Just so you know, there are Black Teachers, Lawyers, Doctors, Engineers, Judges, Presidential Candidates, Mothers, Fathers, Sons, Daughters and the list goes on and on. Will there ever be a time when people are truly judged only by the content of their character as oppossed to the color of their skin?

So in closing I just say one thing. I am not voting for Obama "The Black Man."
I am voting for Barack Obama the best CANDIDATE in my opinion for what the United States of America needs NOW. He just happens to be a Black Man. I love the fact that Women are making history in this election as well, and I am proud that these doors are being Knocked down. This is History! I just wish that it wouldn't have happened in the SAME election year. How ironic is that??
By the way did you know that the First WOMAN to run for President was a BLACK Woman? Yes, it's true. Shirley Chisholm ran in 1972.

To read about it, copy and paste the address below in your browser

So we continue to make strides, and will continue to push on. I know there are alot of people out there that make us look bad. But we can't be held accountable for every person. I know alot of good people who are Muslim, and they get treated as if they were in on the World Trade Center plotting.
Timothy McVeigh blew up the Federal Building in OKC, but we can't look at every white male as a potential bomber. So don't look at all Blacks as Thugs, Gangbangers, and hoodlums. Most of the Black people I'm associated with have careers or are in College or trying to better themselves in some form or fashion. That's why Obama is my choice, because maybe he is the Catalyst to show that it doesn't matter who you are, what color you are... if you believe it, you can acheive it! Thanks for Taking the time out to read this and don't be shy, leave me a comment and let me know how you feel about the issue.

The Video Below is a prime example of how Education can turn things around. The interviewer clearly thinks that the Black man he is talking to is just voting for Obama because he is Black. By the end of the conversation, he extends his hand introduces himself and realizes, some of us actually have a thought process. That's all we can ask for, Respect.

Be Easy,
Flyboy

YEAH I AGREE WITH YOU..... BECAUSE HOW CAN SOMEONE SAY THAT THE ONLY REASON SOMEONE OF COLOR WOULD VOTE FOR OBAMA IS BECAUSE OF OUR SKIN COLOR...WELL WRONG!!!!!!!!...... AND ANOTHER THING... IT'S SAD TO SEE THAT NOW WE HAVE A BLACK MAN RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT..... RACE HAS BECOME AN ISSUE BUT THATS AMERICA FOR YOU EVERYTIME SOMETHING IS GOING DOWN AND IT HAS TO DO WITH A PERSON OF COLOR A RACE ISSUE HAS TO COME INTO PLAY... AND YOUR RIGHT I THOUGHT THE 60'S WAS OVER LONG TIME AGO TO......I MEAN WE ARE LIVING IN THE YEAR 2008 AND WE ARE AT WAR AND ALL PEOPLE CAN SAY IS THE REASON THAT A PERSON OF COLOR WOULD VOTE FOR OBAMA IS ONLY BECAUSE OF HIS SKIN COLOR THAT IS JUST STUPID.... BECAUSE NO MATTER WHAT COLOR HE IS I AM VOTING FOR HIM BECAUSE HE IS REALLY SHOWING THAT HE WANTS TO TURN THIS COUNTRY AROUND AND IF THATS NOT WHAT AMERICA NEEDS THEN YOU LET ME KNOW WHAT WE NEED.....AND ONE LAST NOTE ABOUT HOW PEOPLE THINK THAT PEOPLE OF COLOR ARE STUPID AND WE DONT KNOW ANYTHING AND THAT WE ARE ALWAYS HAVING PROBLEMS.... WELL THE LAST TIME I CHECKED NO MATTER WHAT COLOR YOU ARE EVERY RACE HAS PEOPLE IN IT THAT ARE TROUBLE MAKERS... BUT IT JUST SEEMS LIKE WHENEVER SOMEONE BLACK GETS IN TROUBLE THEY BROADCAST IT ALL OVER THE WORLD TO MAKE OUR RACE LOOK BAD..... AND NO MATTER WHAT COLOR YOU ARE WE ARE ALL PEOPLE WHO HAVE THE SAME THINGS ON THE INSIDE AND OUT WE ARE JUST DIFFERENT COLORS AND I MUST SAY I AM HAPPY GOD MADE US THE WAY HE DID BECAUSE IF EVERYONE IN THIS WORLD WAS THE SAME COLOR IT WOULD BE BORING......SO I SAY VOTE FOR OBAMA!!!!! SO WE CAN SEE THIS WORLD CHANGE FOR THE BETTER..

Ur a sight to see...kinda sumthin lyke me

That was absolutely awesome. You seldom find black men on top of their game as this one was. I like the fact that he knew exactly what he was talking about and didn't feel intimidated at all by the white man. He was able to answer the questions intellectually and with ease (no sweat). Once again that was awesome!!!

Heya Fly! Yeh I find it astonishing that people would say that to you, I watched the news the other nite, and an interviewer said to a black guy 'but youre voting for a white man (McCain) and youre black?' This shocked me, altho I think the interviewer was trying to be 'cool'.
Surely votes should be based on the person's merits and beliefs, whatever colour? Colour shouldnt even be an issue, its the person, and by people saying, 'blacks will vote for Obama cos he's black' is the sort of thing that causes racism? Its time ALL of us started seeing 'people' as opposed to skin colour. Lets just hope whoever it is, we can find some sorta peace in this crazy world! xx

I'm glad you are addressing this issue in your blog. I am was somewhat surprised to read that you received those kinds of messages. It's truly sad to see how backwards many people still are in their thoughts and beliefs. Those people that sent you the messages and all others that think idiotically like them need to realize that people, whether Black, Hispanic, Asian, White or other, have one thing in common....we are all HUMAN. Strip the skin off of our bodies and what do you have? Flesh and blood, bones, organs...we all are made up of the same substances. Plus we have a brain, that many of us do use to store knowledge and educate ourselves.

So when they say "you're only voting for him because he's Black" they need to stick their foot in their mouths and step back....and actually read for themselves about Obama and all the other candidates proposed plans and policies so they can make an educated decision on who to vote for. That's what I've done. I'm making an educated decision based on facts that I have read and seen for myself....don't put me, you, or others in a category of being dumb and ignorant....that category is for all the people who think of blacks or any race for that matter that way. I could go on and on, but I'm not. I will continue to be the strong, smart and successful person that I am and look at others who categorize me and my race as being dumb & ignorant as the unintelligent, pathetic, pitiful people that they are!

OK!!! I have to breathe on this one!!1 WoW!!! Did you take heed to how he was badgering him at first?!?1 I commend how well the gentleman handled it by ever so kindly bringing the interviewer "back down to earth" again. I would have done the same.

As for your post, I am very proud to see you do a thing as such. It's always nice to see a man of intellect share his thoughts instead of surpressing them as many others do. We all knew from the beginning that it would become a "racial issue". Hence, the reason that things have gotten so darn sloppy in the past couple of weeks. Either way, I feel that be it Clinton or Obama will be good...although ONE may be better. As the saying goes, "GOOD, BETTER, BEST"!!! We all will have our preference but at this point, WE ALL should be happy to get BUSH out of office, period!!! ANYONE is better then him!!! I honestly feel bad for ANYONE that has the heart/courage to come behind our current president because what a mess we have to clean.

HOWEVER, let's open our eyes on something......who is REALLY gonna have enough in them and behind them to completely pull BUSH's hands out of the office?? He's got his hands in there pretty deeply enough to still pull the strings on his puppets. TAI

Wow Flyboy I am so glad that you brought this issue up, I have never been racist a day in my life... I am from a small town and a lot of my friends or people who I thought where my friends are white and you know what I really never saw a difference in us until now... I am so confused as to why race is such a big issue in this election it has never been an issue before... Since the first time I have been able to vote I have voted for the person who I felt as though was the best candidate even though that person may not have won every time... This election has made me see some of my friends in a different light some of them are upset with me because Obama has my vote because I feel as though he is the best candidate... They won't even look past his color long enough to listen to his views, but they say that I'm voting for him because he is black that's just not true... However they are not voting for him because HE IS BLACK and that in my eyes just isn't right... We should all come together and vote for the best president for the United States of America not the one who looks like all the rest... That video was great it just proved that we all have the ablity to think no matter what color we are... Thank you for bringing this issue up Flyboy lots of respect to you...

I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU. JUST BECAUSE YOU'RE SUPPORTING SOMEONE WITH THE BEST VIEWS AND THEY HAPPEN TO BE BLACK, DOESNT MEAN THAT YOU'RE A RACIST. AND YOU'RE RIGHT IN SAYING THAT EVERY PRESIDENT HAS BEEN WHITE, IT'S TIME FOR A CHANGE!!!! AND IT'S TIME FOR US (AS BLACK AMERICANS) TO STAND UP AND SAY I WANT THAT CHANGE, AND I WANNA BE A PART OF THAT CHANGE. I'M SORRY I CAN ONLY GIVE YOU 2 KUDOS AT THE MOST...YOU DESERVE A MILLION!!!!

Flyboy you should be applauded for bringing your experience to us. Its sad but true that people have this mind state. Its sad that in 2008 we still are judged by our skin color. I believe people should do the leg work and vote for the candidate that is the best. Color does not matter and I wish and pray that one day people will understand this. I vote for who I believe can make a difference not only for me but for everyone. If people can't understand the state America is in right now then they are probably the main ones saying your voting for him because he's black. That's when we make a stand and say am voting for him because I feel he can make a difference. A difference is what I want, I don't want anyone in office who can't do that. Flyboy you are making a difference by making people aware and you are getting people to talk. That is wonderful and continue to tell us your thoughts and experiences.

I just wanted to share something that happened to me today....a 65 year old white lady came up to me and asked me who I was voting for. After she asked me that, she said (quote) "I'm voting for Obama" and I asked her why she was voting for him. She proceeded to tell me that she thought he was the best candidate..."he's smart, he's a good leader and I trust him to do what's right for the country." Then she said, "and you know what, I'm a Republican." Then before she left, she adamantly told me to tell all my friends to vote for Obama too. If I were ignorant like those people that sent you those messages I would've automatically assumed she was either voting for Hillary or voting Republican...because she's white & old. However, this is 2008 and although there's so much racism still going on, there are still people out there like this lady that know it's not about the skin color. It's about the principles of the candidate, it's about a positive change and who can take our country in that direction. Thank you Flyboy for enlightening so many people's minds and sharing your experiences with us....I will forever be grateful for all that you do!!!!
