73 AFI 100 List

15 AFI 100 Romances List

Wurthering Heights is one of the most depressing movies I have ever seen and not in a good way.  It's just bang-you-over-the-head, droopy dog, sigh inducing, anti-life affirming claptrap.

Of course, this is based off of a 'classic'. The kind of 'classic' where everyone scowls around like Emo-Hitlers and the only happiness is experienced in long-gone flashbacks.

The Searchers has a similar feel to it but it has revenge to live for. These characters are Zoloft deprived loafers that make you want to shoot yourself in the face.

The attempt at hope and joy is chocked like baby seal by the overwhelming combination of disappointment, apathy and despair.

Who the fuck would want to make a movie like this? If Dir. William Wyler were alive today, you could expect him to make such gems as Beloved and Immortal Beloved.

For me, actually sadness is the presence of hope in dark times. Who wants to dwell on this shit?

Even the Clooneyesq David Niven has the life sucked out of him in this film.

Some sample dialogue,

1. "Heathcliff, Go wash your hair, so I needn't be ashamed of you in front of the guests."

2. "I hate you, I hate the look of your sullen ugly hands." "It seems the gypsy has gotten to you too." "Yes, I hate you now get out."

3. "I KNOW..HE LOATHES ME AND DESPISES ME. I KNOW..HE MARRIED ME TO SPITE THE WOMAN HE REALLY LOVES!"

4. "Oh Heathcliff, why won't you let me come near you? I'm not black and horrible like other people think… I'm full of pain."
