Current mood:  nostalgic
hiya friends,

sad news today with the sudden death of John Hughes...i'm not sure how many of you know who he was or what he did, since he sorta dropped off the radar in the mid-90's - but for many of us kids growing up in the 80's, especially in the midwest, John's films played a significant role in framing the the landscape of misunderstood teenage angst; he made it okay to be young and awkward, and ultimately taught us lessons about breaking down stereotypes in the midst of peer pressures, zit creme and puberty. good times. the best times. i mean what 16 year old boy didn't want to be 'John Bender'? just for a day... i know i sure as hell did. i might, still...

..and young molly ringwald..i mean c'mon...that was a gift to us young boys in itself...

i used to drive around out in the suburbs of chicago looking for some of the locations of the great movies he made, just for fun and out of nostalgia...and i found a few, too.
i smoked a ciggy right where the high school had stood, (before it was torn down), where they shot 'the breakfast club' and drove around the little neighborhoods where several other of his films were made - listening to Simple Minds, of course..

i've always felt deeply connected to several of John's films, they've come up time and time again, in reference and in real life - and i'll remain a grateful and thankful fan of his work and influence for the rest of my days.

Rest in peace, Mr. Hughes.

The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Uncle Buck, Some Kind of Wonderful, Pretty In Pink, Sixteen Candles, Planes Trains and Automobiles, Home Alone, and the Vacation movies...some of the greatest movies ever made!  I always felt like he totally understood those of us belonging to Generation X.  He will truly be missed.....

I lived in Germany during the 80's and we LIVED for when our friends would send us videos of these movies..we played them till the tape split or just plain wore out....We had Breakfast Club Fridays in an attempt to feel like we were back in the states...we dressed like our fav character...I hung out in the smoking area..lol....  Molly Ringwald is one of the best...16 Candles is every 80s girls fav movie...Long Duc Dong...can't beat that for one of the funniest characters ever!!......I'm so glad to see someone who also appreciates John Hughes' contribution to film history.  He was a master.

Phil, I totally agree.  It is a sad day for anyone who came of age in the 80's.  John Hughes really understood what it was to be a teen in any age.  I too wanted to be John Bender.  Even if I may have been a bit of a neo zoom dweebie at times.  I remember the two of us watching the Breakfast Club together.  And everytime I here Simple Minds, it takes me back to the days when we were fighting our way through the twisted confines of puberty and soaring towards avenues unknown.  Now all these years later as we search out our dreams on the highways of life, I think "Don't you forget about me"  And still I never have forgotten.  Thank you Mr. Hughes.  Here's to an artist, his dreams and his leagacy.  From every prom queen, basket case, stoner, theif and neo-zoom dweebie out there.  We salute you John Hughes.

Oh and by the way;  My pot is in Johnson's shorts!

yeah, he was a great director. there was almost somthing hypnotic about his 1980s movies. He was able to bring the essence of suburban chicago to the screen in a way noone else did. Weird Science and Breakfast club are both all time greats. I wish his family the best in this difficult time in their lives.
