Wow, what a great book. It is not that it was so perfectly written, but I guess it is more of the timing in which I read this book. It is about a true story of a woman in her early thirties that leaves her husband, her home, and her career behind and decides to travel 4 months in Italy, 4 months in India, and 4 months in Indonesia. The journey and the realizations that she comes to is what is so interesting about the book. I have a quirky habit when I read books. I underline every passage that I relate to or that speaks to me. I sure have a whole lot of ink that I left in this book. To give an idea my favorite passage is: "People think a soul mate is your perfect fit, and that's what everyone wants. But a true soul mate is a mirror, the person who shows you everything that's holding you back, the person that brings you to your own attention so you can change your life. A true soul mate is probably the most important person you'll ever meet, because they tear down your walls and smack you awake...soul mates, they come into your life just to reveal another layer of yourself to you, and then they leave...purpose was to shake you up...show you your obstacles and addictions, break your heart open so new light could get in, make you so desperate and out of control that you had to transform your life...-Elizabeth Gilbert

That's an interesting perspective. I'll have to think this one through. I'm not sure if I absolutely agree with the "and then they leave" part, not sure why that would have to be the case, but I do admire the passion and conviction behind the statement.

It has always been my belief that Soul mates come into our lives to teach us what we want in a relationship and teach us what we don't want. The person who comes into our life and fills a part of us that is missing is a Heartmate.

This passage you have quoted takes that whole thought in a new direction. Or perhaps more likely it expands upon that thought.

By the way, I have to admit that I thought this sight was nothing more than a fan site. You are obviously well read and well spoken. Nice to "meet" you.

Interesting.!?!?

It's very possible for more than one person to come into your life and truly smack you awake/reveal something to you about yourself in a way that you may have never thought about.
In theory there could exist an abundance of soulmates for everyone, I would say it's possible to discover something about yourself from anyone such as a brand new baby or an older person that has already lived a long life.

I love that line and it is so true. I don't believe that there is one true soulmate, but there are important people that are or can be in you life that can show you yourself through their eyes.

If you find someone like that they are worth keeping and treasuring and eventhough I don't think there is a perfect person for anyone... anyone could be a perfect person for anyone else with the right chemestry, respect and love.

Bravo
Michael

i just finished reading paulo coehlos the zahir, was about a author whos wife left him for two years, because the relatiosnhip changed and was talking how the love died and needed to be revived, i just talked about the 4 hungers, which i said in the opening line could be said as three, the mind body and soul, im taking my two week break from reading, i read three books in a row so i need a break, the last line was what his zahir did, an obscession that can be either heaven or hell(well thats what zahir means) thats what his wife was when she left him without a word, the author is very interesting well to me he is, his books are insightful and questioning, well thats what i get from them, i'll check out the book

I must read this book

" soul mates, they come into your life just to reveal another layer of yourself to you, and then they leave...purpose was to shake you up...show you your obstacles and addictions, break your heart open so new light could get in, make you so desperate and out of control that you had to transform your life.."

Well,if this is true, the name of my soulmate is Serena.
And it's funny, she's always a woman to me,
is the first song that always remember me that girl.

The second song is Notting Hill Soundtrack,
She by Elvis Costello

"a true soul mate is a mirror, the person who shows you everything that's holding you back, the person that brings you to your own attention so you can change your life."

That sounds more like my best friend and one of my professors at school. Interesting thought, though.

I hope you don't mind, but I've got to use that quote in my own blog. By Elizabeth Gilbert's philosophy, I'd say I've had about five soul mates so far. I don't know if I can live through another one ;). It's a beautiful concept though and very wise.

Not to get too nerdy-astrological on you...but I'm gonna...did you know that you and I and every other individual from 1971 to 1984 was born while Pluto was in Libra. Pluto (Scorpio's planet of sex, death and rebirth) is an astrological marker signifying the places in your life that will undergo the most intense transformational development. And this jagged little pill made its mark in Libra: the sign of partnership, significant others, and marriage at the time of our births.

I'm by no means sold on the accuracy of astrology but little things keep adding up for me. As I recall, the music that influenced our generation was filled with angst and heartbreak. Every generation has that kind of thing in their repertoire. But I can't help but think ours was just a little more broken hearted (Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Nirvana etc.). Consider the differences in every new wave of pop culture and you'll see that each has its own distinct and very different flavor based on the prevailing collective thought process of the time.

So what good does knowing any of this do us? I don't know. I just wanted to share it with you and tell you that I am going through similar changes and have been all my life so I feel for you and I understand (at least from my perspective). I think all this only makes us better and I'm hopeful that it is preparing us for a much deeper and more satisfying love that will eventually come.

Wow, to think of a soul mate in that fashion is almost scary. Once you wrap your head around it though, it's completely correct. It does nothing but highlight the fact that the one I'm with right now is the wrong one.

Funny

this gives me a clue of Aria has been into shaping her life in he way she wants to.
I think, mirror type of soul mate is good for adjusting weakness in me, somehow it's tired thing. hope Aria being happy naturally

You really seem like a hopeless romantic. Anyways, it must feel good to be able to connect with someone else. Interesting people are hard to come by in literature and in well, just about anything.
Whoever your soulmate is is a lucky guy. Hopefully he knows what he has. He better be a total badass or a bunch of single guys like me are gonna be shaking our heads. I remember joking with my brother saying that maybe him and I are soulmates. It's funny because it's kinda pathetic, kinda true, and also sounds really gay (not that there's anything wrong with that). Why can't it just be a woman?!

"Soul mate" -- because the transformation was spiritual for the author. And true in that way, such a soul mate doesn't have to be romantic, but also doesn't have to be a person; same transformation can be inspired from people, passing animals, or perhaps a windswept hilltop... just that people tend to be the most kick-in-the-pants about it. ;)
