Artist finds time to come back to roots

By Adrian Gomez
Of the Journal
Having time to relax is a rare event for Eric Hisaw these days.
The Las Cruces-born musician is in the process of producing an album for girlfriend Chrissy Flatt, touring and writing songs for his new album.
"It's been a crazy time, but I've always been one to stay busy," he says during a break before a show in San Antonio, Texas. "I really don't like not being busy."
Hisaw, who is based in Austin, says the year has been pretty good to him despite of the economy. He's been able to travel the country and perform small shows.
"I've always been one to play any show I can," he says. "There's always a chance I can win over a new fan and performing is always what I've wanted to do."
Hisaw is gearing up for a seven-day run of performances in New Mexico. He says it's always good to come home.
"There is no place like New Mexico," he says. "It's always very nice to perform in front of the crowd who saw you get your start."
Before Hisaw heads out to New Mexico, he says there has to be more production done on Flatt's album before he can concentrate on his music.
"During breaks from working on production, I try to make time to sit down and write," he says. "There's something magical about sitting down with a guitar. No matter what's been happening during the day, picking up the guitar immediately gives me inspiration."
Hisaw's last album, "Nature of the Blues," was released in 2008 and he says he's ready to start trying out new material with the crowds. He says having a little more than a year to write has given him some new ideas.
"Since I've been in the game for a while now, I've become a perfectionist," he says of his music. "The songs have to be a certain caliber before I feel comfortable performing them live. I also want to show how much I've grown with my music. It's something that very important to me."
Hisaw says the new album will be released early 2010. He admits to having half of the album written and needs to work on production.
"This is the best part of the process," he says. "Everything on the road inspires me and then I take pen to paper and just start writing. I'm looking forward to what comes of this tour."
