- or did the industry leave God???
Something is wrong in the Gospel music industry! When did it go wrong?
I'll tell you:
The moment businessmen took over the music MINISTRY – and turned it into an INDUSTRY!!
I am disappointed. Disillusioned. Frustrated...
Not so much on a personal level. More saddened by the way the industry works.
I have experienced the gospel industry both from the inside and from the outside. Before I go on let me just say, that I HAVE met some good men and women there! People who do a wonderful job! Please keep that in mind!
BUT – there is something very wrong in the Gospel music industry!
Focus has shifted from message to money!
From seeking to serve – to just seeking success!
I have been offered recording deals from several American gospel labels.
The first time I was offered a deal I was overwhelmed. I signed the contract, but it didn't work out! Long story short: I lost some money, but I learned lesson number 1:
Some gospel labels are no better than any other label!
Second lesson was learned when I was offered deal #2. I did NOT sign the contract this time. The label took my masters anyway and released the CD in the US... (I still can't believe it) They even put their name under my songs to "score" my publishing rights. Lesson number 2:
Some gospel labels MAY be even worse than other labels?!?!
You know something is wrong, when you can't do any business without having your lawyer present!
You know something is wrong when the label asks you to change the words of a song to make it suitable for radio!
You know something is wrong, when a label wants to bind you to a contract for 5 – 7 years without any guaranties that you will even record.
You know something is wrong, if a label won't work with you unless you give them the publishing rights to your songs as well.
You know something is wrong when an artist can sell thousands of CDs – and never see a dime!
All this – and much more – while the label talkes about God and saving the world. It doesn't add up!
Am I bitter 'cause I am not a big star? No!
Am I jealous of people who "made it"? Hmm – no, actually not!
Am I saying that ALL gospel labels are BAD? No – but... many of them are out of focus! Also some of the smaller indie labels. "Indie" does not mean than they don't know the same tricks as the big guys!
Is it OK for a label to make money? Of cause!
That's not my point... But they have to treat the artist right. With respect. They have to think less about radiohits and more about "hitting" people with the message!
Should we expect higher standards from the Christian / Gospel labels? Yes! No doubt about it. Loose the business attitude, the fancy titles, the lights and the smoke – and start serving the Good News to the world! Then the music will hit the radiostations even if you tried to stop it!!
I guess one of the major problems is that gospel is so popular right now. There is so much money involved in the US gospel industry. The corporate world is slowly taking control of the leading gospellabels. And when THAT happens we really have a problem.
So HAS God left the Gospel music industry?
I really hope not! But sometimes it looks that way. Many things are going on in God's name – but I am not sure that He agrees with all of it...
Anyway, I am glad that I don't have to be the judge!
And to those of you who may think I am naïve, and that I don't know how the businessworld works... well you just proved my point. It shouldn't be so complicated spreading the GOSPEL!
Peace
