Songwriting – don't try to be original!
(Chapter 2 from my coming series on songwriting)

Once you have decided on the message of the song (chapter 1) start brainstorming! Write down all your thoughts. Don't censor anything yet. Don't worry about structure or rime.

And - don't try to be original!!

Why? Well – to be honest, everything has been said before!
If you have to wait until you have an original thought you may have to wait forever!!

Maybe you think I am cynical. Maybe you are right?!
But I write this to set you free!! Not to bring you down.

When I started writing it took me FOREVER to write a song. I would sit by the piano for hours waiting for lighting to strike. I would not settle for anything less than brilliant. I gave up on SO many songs because they did not match my unrealistic expectations. My goal was to be original and fresh. I wanted to be different.

But I had to realize that I was not able to be that...

What I WAS able to do was to write songs about MY life.
To write about MY problems and MY pain.
I was able to write about MY joy and MY dreams
To write about MY God.

When I wrote "Lord hold me*" I didn't say ANYTHING new. You can find hundreds of songs with the same message. So should I not have written the song? Of cause I should. Because I NEEDED to write it! The words are not deep or profound. They won't go down in history as great poetry. BUT still – this song changed the lives of many people.

Why? Because I didn't try to be someone I'm not!
I didn't try to write about something that I had not LIVED and felt in my own life.
How can you lead someone to a place you've never been to yourself?
How can you be 20 years old and expect of yourself to write with the wisdom and experience of a 40 year old?

You have to write songs that matches who you are. What you've been through.

When you write about something that is important to you, chances are that it is important to someone else too! When you write about real "stuff" – real life – people can relate. Everybody needs someone to "hold them" – no matter how many songs there is about that subject.

You'll never know if what seems "unoriginal" or "simple" to you is just what people need to hear. That's what I experienced with "Lord hold me*"

So am I saying that you should just settle with whatever comes to mind first?
No – of cause not!! (and I will talk about that later) I am just saying that when you start out – when you brainstorm - don't be too hard on yourself. Don't dismiss ideas 'cause they seem "unoriginal". Maybe that idea will set of an other idea... and an other – and suddenly you are a whole other place... 'cause you allowed yourself to be WHO YOU are!

In a musical world of "copy and paste" being yourself IS being original!

"Lord hold me" is in my musicplayer

Lord I come before You
Hear me now I pray
In Your presence I find comfort
You're my hidingplace

Lord hold me now I pray
I need You please let me stay
Only You can heal my broken heart
Never let me go

Lord You're my hidingplace
I run to You for shelter and grace

Lord hold me now

That's so true... I find it amusing that an artist thinks he can lead me to a place he/she has never encountered. Great work... I need all the help I can get begin waxing lyrical again.

I agree!! Being GENUINE, RELEVANT, and LED BY GOD beats original any day - in fact sadly enough being those things in our polluted industry IS ORIGINAL!!! it's definately NOT the norm...

Hans;

Spot on with your comments here! I was trying to follow the same old verse/chorus/bridge/chorus/verse mold with my music (I play instrumental guitar stuff). I have learned that that formula does not always have to hold true especially with instrumental music! I now write it as I feel it!

Also in your other blog message about God has left Gospel music. Well I am not sure that is actually 100% true, but the "artists" have definately left God out of the music! It is so watered down it it just pitiful! I better stop now before I really raise my blood pressure! :-) Your blog always gets me going that's for sure! Thanks and keep it up!

Hello Hans,

Yes I think music writing can be and should be personal. We all have different life experiences and they should be shared with others in song.

I hope to work my talents as a songwriter and help artists as well.

God Bless and Best wishes,

ummm ok i agree in a few things
but i guess everyone got diffrent motivations to write
and everybody has his own way to let it flow
there are no rules, there is no good and no bad
the worst thing is judging the way someone is creative[shure as long he hurts or disables anyone else]

bc our creative thoughts is something noone can take us
no one can teach
and judge

Hey!

I so agree with everything you said there. It's the same with singing some lyrics. You can't sing about something what you didn't experience. Sure you can act, but soon listeners will not feel the emotion the song was supposed to have. Since I am singer-songwriter and still young I srugle with that sometimes. I guess it's just the way it is. Like you said you have to be true to your self and someone who listens it will recognize it and hopefully it will move them.

God bless you in all you do!

Greetings from Bosnia and Herzegovina

Alen :)

Hi Hans,
I like your honesty it makes a change from the method stuff that many books would have us all believe.
Write what's in your heart, that touches His heart...

OK how about asking the Holy Spirit what song the Father would like to write through you, then step forward.

I love the peace that comes from the first chord or note, after all the pianos etc. are just pieces of wood and plastic that won't release a sound until we approach.good stuff.

Man you are simply right! I just think if you can't ( and must not try to be ) original, still you can,and have to,make all your music in the best way... i mean,i see in today music a little attention for details and above all for arranging. When I listen old songs like the ones from Jackson 5 and Earth Wind and Fire it all seems to be perfectly put in,every note is important, every space is important...even if sometimes I still find myself tryin' to make something different (err,in my playin'still is not difficult to recognize my heroes Jaco and Pino palladino).

Yes, but Cry Baby, we must always try to give 100% or else we allow mediocrity to take over. It is equivilant to our school teachers telling our children, "Oh Honey, Just do the best you can." without even striving to achieve more in their life. If doing "the best you can" is all we strive for, we may never know the greatness God has placed within each of us. I agree with you that the older music was "perfect", but they put hours upon hours into making it that way. Today's technology allows people to be recording artists in their garage or home office and the public is eating it up. Great response from you though.
Blessings,

And then again "The best you can" could be so much more than you imagined...........

Doing the best you can, could actually be about achieving your full potential - if you choose to see it that way?

And asking someone to "Just do the best you can" could be a way of relieving people - school children? - of outside pressure (competition, other people's expectations, fear of failure and inadequacy), thus setting them free to concentrate on their main focus - doing the very best they can?

Now, couldn't it?

Taking the pressure off people doesn't always amount to lowering their standards, I believe.

And I also believe that a lot more can be achieved through love, space and support, than through strictness and fear.

Sure, you should encourage people - children? - to strive for something higher, more, and not lower the bar if you don't make the jump the first time 'round. But you should also allow them to strive by their own motivation. And lend them the inspiration to do so.

Perhaps I should tell you that I come from both musical worlds - the "old one" where you spend hours and years and lifetimes perfecting what you do and also the "new one" where you use technology to achieve another kind of perfection. I don't see them as mutually exclusive.

Respectfully, Hansen

Greetings from Georgia!

One is blessed to really to see the heart of individuals who dare to put themselves out there to uplift & encourage others! Your words, "But I write this to set you free!! Not to bring you down" are so encourgaging.

Thank you for your yeildedness and sensitivity to [the what and how] of re-connecting/re-membering the body of Christ.

As I was reading your blog, I experienced such truth and love - as from the Lord, and was further reminded of portions of Ephesians 4 (3-7; 11-16).

3.Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
4.There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling;
5.One Lord, one faith, one baptism,
6.One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.
7.But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ.

11. And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;
12. For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:
13. Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:
14. That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;
15. But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:
16. From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.

You have been graced with tremendous giftings! May our Father continue to shower down upon you and yours!

ok... Now I understand. I must say that for me, other people's lives inspire me most. Not that I'm not blessed or anything! Lets say that I was fortunate in a sense... Some people I know have pains they can't describe and I try to reach out to them with songs that target a possible solution to their problems... It's easier to heal others than myself... This is what your writing inspired me:

His Name is Jesus.

I can stand in the rain
Hold your hand and share your pain
Even though I don't fully understand
I'll will see you through the end.

But if you pick up the broken pieces
of a heart that couldn't be fixed
if you need to feel brand new, my friend,
I can show you someone who can.

His name is Jesus
and He's here with us
He can make it all go away
If you cry out to him and pray

Say you'll be there,
same time, same place, tomorrow
as your blessing will come this way!
His word is faithful,
heavenly wonderful.

In a world where so much revolves around being something or someone you are not, it is refreshing to hear these words of encouragement, for in being you and expressing yourself and your experiences you are actually being original, for there is not another person on this earth who is like you!!!

I think you're right inasmuch as it's counterproductive to "try" to be "original" if you're not actually being yourself. Your songs should be an extension of yourself. Songwriting is an artful form of communication. There is nothing wrong with striving for innovation, if that's where you're lead to go, but just trying to say or do something that has "never been done" is not likely to turn out very well for most of us. It will probably be either incoherent, or the artist will be so frustrated that nothing is ever completed.

With that said, I think everyone approaches writing a little bit differently. We're all writing for different audiences, after all. I think the world would be a lot less interesting if artists like Radiohead or David Crowder Band just resorted to staying in the box.

Hey man, you are so right and I thank you for your wisdom and songwriting expirience that you sharing with me. The only thing with me is that I am totally different than you were, it takes me about five minutes to write a song. It almost seems as it's a gift, because when I write I hear and of the vocal and music arrangments that comes along with it and all I have to do is create it. I think that brainstorming and going to that deep spiritual part of your music soul plays a magnificant part in writing that perfect song. So you should dig deep down, and hey, go to a special place of peace and comfort, somewhere that you can concentrate and be able to bring out what's deep inside your soul.

Thanks so much,

Hi Pastor.... well, thanks for stoppin by, and your totally right...... when writing anything or doin anything for God, it has to be original, authentic..... that's the whole reason for Jesus Christ coming down from Heaven to Earth, ... he knew that he had to do something more than just talk thru man, and work miracles through man, so he had to be a man, something where man can actually see, touch, feel,...... just stay true to you, and true to God...... Like I heard this saying in another song, "Let go and Let God"........ God bless!

This sounds just like what I used to do when I wrote poetry. And then I started trying to be original and wow people and couldn't seem to write anything else. For a long time.

But now I am writing again and even some in Spanish! After reading this, I will write more. And start putting some of them to music again as well.

Thank you for the encouragement.

Well this blog caught my eye. I guess all I wanted to say was that I agree that everything has been said before. Only, I think everybody can original when they are writing a new song. There is always a new way of thinking about somthing. There is always a new way to put something. If a bunch of people were all give one word topic to write about, I bet there would be similarities but there would be different originals thought and different takes on that same topic.

I do like what you have to say about encouaging people to write songs that we have lived and experienced. Because those songs are what touch people because they are from a real experience that probably many others have expereinced too. So, yes you should write a song that has maybe been written before because perhalps that way you write it will be just a little different enough in the way you wrote it to touch another person who might not have got it the first time in another song.

Thanks for your blog.
God Bless.

Hi Hans, i'm Beppe Nicolosi, i left a comment on your blog "Did you heard the Angels sing". That time I wrote in my lunguage in Italian, because was very important for me, that you don't misunderstanding my tought.
Now i can write in English, because i'm sure that if will be grammatical or verbs or something else mistakes, you can pardon me and understand me the same. For me is more simple understan all that someone write in English, but if i must write in english i have some problems.
About your tough, i'm not yet a songwriter, because only now i'm really free with Mind and Spirit, but I'm an Interpreter, and share you tough, is not essential to be original for give emotions, the words could be the same in many songs, but if put soul and joy when sing or composing songs, the message will reach to the people.
And if you live the life you love is more simple.
When i start to sing 15 years ago, i was so sad and lost, and i was able only sing Blues, now i can't sing it in the same way, because my Spirit is changed i wrote you "I heard the Angels sing"

God bless you Beppe Nicolosi

Hey you~
thank you for sharing your blog with us all...I agree with the whole 'don't be to hard on yourself' thing. Too many of us are always looking for the next best thing, always trying to please others, trying to find that right 'hook'...yes, I agree that the tune must be catchy but first and foremost, one must write from the heart, hence, the beautiful lyrics to Lord hold me now...the music will create itself...if we just let it go and make it our own, everything will fall into place. I hope that makes sense.

Let your heart sing, put your mind at ease, LET GO AND LET GOD DO IT FOR YOU!

Hans, Hello from here in Australia! You know, the Lord works in Mysteriuos Ways....

these past few weeks, I have started writing so many new pieces for my next album, and have been getting so far and having to put them away, becuase of the dreaded curse known as writers block! lol....

This Morning I was praying, and Asking the Lord to renew my mind with the inspiration that I need to write the music I feel in my heart,,, the praise that I have inside, for his Glory etc.... It's there, but I've never been at this place before that I've never felt this close or at peace in my own self, let alone my walk with him...

This blog, has been an answer to my prayers, your Words have renewed my mind and heart with the inspiration its needed....

Thank you, and Blessings to you...

I've always found the same thing! When I write songs like "You Move Me", or "In Another Time", they just flow out of me as easily as a tear when I'm sad. These songs I just mentioned almost wrote themselves, just by letting them come out as they were... but in the case of "You Move Me", the second verse didn't come for another 3 years because I tried to "engineer" it instead of "allowing" it.

Great thoughts, and thanks for caring enough to share with the rest of us! God bless you.

Dear Hans Christian,
thats a true and important message you send out here!
If we work out a song ( or instrumental music like me) and just only think about technics, the "law" of music....the general taste of the masses, the big time operators in the music scene, like van morrison sing about it before...we will never bring out something true original.
But if we follow our enlightment, our own idea, we will make something unique. Maybe not all of this will be for the masses, but it will enjoy some people in a very special way - and give a very close private message about the one who wrote the song.

Thank you, I think everyone can feel your positive energy!

I don't want to get into the semantics of defining what it means to be original or not.

However, by virtue of the fact our Creator Renews the creation constantly=which implies that every new moment is an original moment.

Capturing that new 'original,' moment when one is engaged in brainstorming to put together a new configuration of sounds and words within the context of space and time which is constantly reflecting a renewed original vessel of the next second.

We all can recognize the same thing and agree generally what the thing is.

For example, if I mention the word 'bear,' some will think about brown, polar or black varieties of this species. Others will think about Yogi an Boo Boo Bear, some will think about the Chicago Bears-
what someone might come up with is a perception that others agree is unique based upon that unique person's unique soul codifying my example and then presenting a combination of letters which could have but did not put together and then the next level of perception is activated via increased attention span given to the concept of bear.

What I am really getting at is that the rules of engagement for creativity can't be limited by our own personal experience which may be valid for us but it may stifle the creative juices in another soul who has much to offer.

For sure we must be ourselves-for our Loving Creator decreed we be who we are.
To reflect the Divine Wisdom invested within us in a renewed or original way increases human awareness to find something original within their soul essence rooted in the Creator=Source of Everything including Originality.
Ahava Echad/One Love

I totally agree with that. It reminds me of Scott Adams "Disclaimers of originality".
The likelyhood of 2 persons having a similar idea at the same time is big.
Everything has been written before but not in your personal manner because
there is only one like you walking around on this earth. In this sense, being original
means just being natural and as you say being yourself.
Thas makes a song special because you and everyone in this world
is special and original.

Enjoyed your commentary. Caused me to reflect on how I've grown form trying to make songs happen to simply letting them happen. In the beginning I would set times and places and sit forever "waiting" on "the right" prhase, sentence or statement to pop in my head about whatever topic I chose to write about. Man that was tough! lol As time progressed I realized that there was a better way to write.

I've now come to appreciate the varying ways the Lord allows lyrics to come through me. Many times, like most I'm sure, there are nights of waking out of a deep sleep with a lyric in your heart that you just have to write down in order to resume sleep lol (I love those moments). There are times when the Lord would have me to lock away and write for a brief period of time (like for a 1/2hr or an hr) and He is directly speaking and I'm writing (really love those moments) - I can recall a year ago sitting at my computer, opening Microsoft Word and literally being steered through 8 worship pieces that were written in 1hr! I know that sounds crazy, but that's one of the ways I write and I can't explain it any other way than to say that that's how it happens! Glory!). What I don't do much of anymore is force a song. Whatever is in my heart to write at that time, I write. Sometimes it's a complete song and sometimes its just a few lines, but once I realize that I'm about to "labor" over lines, I leave the piece alone and come back to it when I'm once again inspired to or when I'm less frustrated over words (for me those times allow for greater flow of thought).

All in all, I try my best to write truth without "frills" and I've found that such lyrics are more heartfelt to the listener.

Here is one of the worship songs written in that 1hr session at the computer last year. We sing it in praise and worship at my church.

Lord we give you glory
For all you've done
By your power you have taught us
To overcome
Now and forever we praise you
Bowing in your presence
We bless you

Singing glory to your name, glory to your name
Lord we love you, we adore you
Glory to your name

We ascribe all honor to your name
We lift our hands to heaven
And thank you for your grace
Now and forever we praise you
Bowing in your presence
We bless you

Singing glory to your name, glory to your name
Lord we love you, we adore you
Glory to your name
