October 16, 2009 - Friday

Current mood:  happy
Last night, I received an E-mail from my dear friend, Carole, regarding a cat named Roni who was on "death row" at an animal shelter in Los Angeles.  Roni was scheduled to be euthanized today (10/16) and when I saw the E-mail, I swung into action.

First, I called the shelter in LA to make certain Roni was still there and still alive.  The answer was "yes" to both of my questions.  I told the lady that I spoke with not to euth the cat, that I was going to do everything in my power to get him saved.  She informed me that his time was up at 5 PM Pacific Time on Friday, 10/16.

I immediately began posting Roni's sad story and urgent pleas for help on social networking sites, like MySpace, Facebook and Twitter.  So many people responded by reposting my posts and trying to help.  My heart always feels good when I witness the compassion, generosity and humanity that dwells inside many people.

Long story short, Roni was rescued within about an hour.  I relayed the joyful news all across the networking sites and, together, we celebrated Roni's rescue.  Perhaps it's a small victory, considering that millions of animals die in shelters every year, but I focused on the fact that RONI IS ALIVE AND GETTING A NEW, FOREVER HOME!

This morning, I noticed a comment left for me on one of the networking sites.  It read:

So, the person that adopted the cat, did so because of your message Chip? Just curious.

I was a bit troubled by that comment.  Did the person who left it think that I was trying to take all the credit for Roni's rescue?  Patting myself on the back and playing the hero?  Or was he/she truly "just curious" and happy that Roni's life was saved?

I have a deep and abiding love for animals.  I assist with animal rescue and advocacy as often as my schedule will allow.  I particularly focus on "at risk" animals ... those who are in crisis or are slated to be put to death in the near-future.

But I am just one person.  Sometimes, it takes many people to bring about a happy ending.  And the "ending" for Roni was happy.  In reality, the cat got a reprieve and a new beginning.  Praise God!

I didn't save Roni.  WE ALL DID!  Our collective love of animals and our respect for life did it.  Did my messages on social networking sites help to make this possible?  I pray to God that they did, but do I know for sure that it happened because of those posts?  No, I do not.

What I do know is this: I didn't sit idly by and let Roni be euthanized.  And neither did many of you.  We did what we could in a communal effort to spare his life.  And WE succeeded!  WE ALL SUCCEEDED BECAUSE RONI IS ALIVE TODAY AND HE WILL BE ALIVE THROUGHOUT MANY TOMORROWS!

In the future, you will undoubtedly see many more cries for help coming from me.  I'll be asking for prayers for those in need.  I'll be begging you to help animals or children or senior citizens who need our help.  And I'll do so because I care and I try to do whatever I can, even in small ways, to make this old world a better place.

To say that I love everyone whose heart was touched by Roni's story would be a vast understatement.  Thank you for helping to save his life.  If you have the resources and the love available to adopt an animal whose life is in jeopardy at an animal shelter, please do so.  TODAY!  Before time runs out...

May God continue to bless us all.  ^i^

People/Humans can B snarky. Good clarification, Chip and ultimately the truth. These types of situations are meant to teach us as humans compassion for life and one another. Through compassion we get in contact w/our higher selves and hopefully exercise that compassion muscle more and in the process get thru to more humans to do the same. Roni taught the lesson of compassion to all those who read about his story. Hopefully it touched the snarky person in the same way. However some folks do not know how to express themselves in an adequate way and can come across snarky. *lol* It takes a lot of personal energy to stand up and defend a being that can not do this for themselves (I do the same thing "rescue animals") it is uplifting and rewarding when the goal to save a life has been reached and given a good, loving home. Chip was the messenger as he is in so much of his work, as many of us are. We need the messenger so the hero can step forward and take action. In this case to the new owners of Roni, Congratulations to them and all the energies involved in making this transpire! ..
Peace, Love & Light

Chip. I'm guessing that most of us understand that you do not post these "save the animals" pleas for the adulation. You do it because you love animals and want to help them. And you use your fan base in a positive way, to get the message out to as many people as you can. You don't strike me as the sort of person who wants credit for good deeds. You do what you can and you share credit where it's due.

Even if there are people out there who may think otherwise. Screw them! :)

I don't know the motive of the comment mentioned above, but I assume they were asking if this person who rescued this cat would have gone to a shelter at all, if you hadn't put the message out. ....
..I always have personal mixed feelings about these messages.  I, too, love and respect animals, and put my mouth and my money toward organizations that rescue them, advocate for them, and educate people about spaying, neutering, and caring for them.   When I hear about a animal that needs a home, I do everything I can to find one.  If the opportunity falls in your lap, you should run with it.....
....But for every one animal rescued by an effort like this, hundreds more are still euthanized on the same day.  What makes this one cat so special?  Don't get me wrong, I'm very happy she was rescued, and I applaud your efforts, and I'm grateful to the person who rescued her.  But I think the above-mentioned commenter probably has feelings like mine.  There's always this one particular animal that needs rescued, while more often, many others that also need rescued, equally deserving to be rescued, go unmentioned, and without rescuing or rescuers.  ....
....This unnecessary death and destruction won't stop until everyone decides to be a responsible pet parent.  We can't choose for other people and we can't control the actions of other people.  All we can do is be an example of a responsible pet parent, and communicate our heartfelt ideas, and support organizations like the ASPCA, Friends Sanctuary, or others.  ....
....You are a shining example of a responsible pet parent, as well as an animal rescue advocate.  Just do what you think is right, and don't second guess how people view your actions.  If you're doing what feels right, their views don't matter.  ....
....
......

Exactly ...but why are you saying "This one particular animal"  it starts with one...and that ..ONE.. can represent ..ALL..... There is always a begining so why are you skeptical, you should be overjoyed . This.. ONE.. animal was ..AS.. important as ..ALL.. the animals that need rescue!!!  Just saying............

Hi Chip,

As always...very eloquently put. It is easy to distinguish your genuine care about the animals and/or people in need that you rally support for. Glad to hear of; happy to participate ~ count me as just one of many.

Email & social networks  with the need for brevity challenge me. I'm verbose by nature and angst over what I write sometimes being taken the wrong way (of course after its beyond the 'sent' key) and have found myself trying to read between the lines of others' words.

When in doubt I take it at a word-for-word basis and say it aloud deadpan to avoid assuming a filter. Can't say its a crystal ball into intentions or even right 100% of the time, but, geesh, it takes aload off my mind.

On this Fabulous Friday I'm gonna trust that the just curious writer was probably really happy to be a part of the team that wanted Roni saved..and was just curious.

I'm such a Pollyanna....lol

We have 3 bulldogs we rescued from the pound and they are the love of our lives.. they are such gentle, loving giants.. Everyone should start adopting from a pound.. You get a great quality dog without having to pay the high prices from a breeder and there is this strange, strong bond with owner and an abandoned dog.. They worship the ground you walk on for saving them.. As long as you dont abuse them.. Remember most of these animals you are adopting have come from horrible, abusive situations.. And all they want is lots of love and a good home to lay their heads..

SAVE THE ANIMALS ON DEATH ROW!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Chip, you are an awesome awesome human being. I do the same thing with rabbits. I have a rescue/foster home and am registered with the Nebraska Humane Society. We have also had a hand in shutting down inhumane rabbit breeders and busting a drug ring in which the rabbits were used as a cover. God bless you and EVERYONE who extends their heart to the beloved animals we are meant to care for...

Dear Chip,

Some folks are just CYNICAL and cannot accept good that's been done for another or love that's been expressed without questioning the motives or somehow finding fault in the process.  I feel sorry for these folks - their arms are so full of fear and doubt that they cannot appreciate nor embrace beauty or love.  These folks miss out on so much in life.

Your celebrity provides a powerful opportunity to make the world a better place, and I admire that you recognize and embrace that.  When you use your celebrity to help those in need, whether an animal, a child, a tree, or a blade of grass, MORE POWER TO YOU!!!!  And all of us!  :)

I also admire that you remain humble.  Don't worry about those who accuse you (directly or indirectly) of promoting charitable causes for  your own self-promotion.  You know the truth of your intentions, who gives a crap about what the skeptics and cynics sayd - and it's only the end result that matters... a life was saved!  :)  YAY!!!!  :)

Love and Blessings,
Maryl

We adopted  a beagle from a shelter ans she was the best dog in the world, we lost her after doing all we could to save her life. She had auto immune disease , a little of us went with her the day we had to face we could not let her suffer any longer. Her eyes spoke volumns and we knew what we had to do although it broke our hearts.God Bless you for caring keep up the good work of getting the information out by networking....Congrats to all who spread the word and found Roni a good home.

I thank you for writing this, Chip! I am so delighted Roni found a home! I volunteer once a week at my local animal shelter&as part of my volunteer position, I am allowed to write notes&stick them on the cats profiles! Well my notes have helped many cats find a home. It is a rewarding feeling knowing you are a part of the teamwork it takes to get an animal into a forever home isnt it? Last week I cuddled with an 8 year old cat named Gabby. Like Roni, she was given up simply because the owners didnt want her anymore. I wrote a note about her, going the extra mile as usual& thank my lucky stars she was adopted! I am fortunate enough to volunteer at an animal shelter that doesnt play "death row", but does have to euthanize the animals with behavioral issues&uncurable health issues. If they meet their goal of raising one million + dollars, they can move from their current facility to a new building which they hope to use to correct behavioral issues instead of euthanizing the animals. Pray it happens!

..Hey Chip, that is good news about Roni and I think it takes a small group of speical people like you to send out a post about a cat who was going to be put down and you did save the cat by posting the story about it on MySpace and so forth. So in a way, yes you deserve more credit for saving the life of a cat who other wise would have not been saved if you haven't heard about the cat's story. I also believe that it takes one person to do the miricle but also with others who are passionate and caring to help post the story to save  this wonderful cat. Great job and also you need to give yourself a pat on the back and give yourself some credit. Happy to hear that Roni is now safe and have a new home...

There are times when celebrity can be used to serve a higher purpose.  Would the person who rescued Roni have known about the cat otherwise? Probably not.  It was because of your fan base that word got out through all kinds of social networking sites, starting with your MySpace blog.  You had a hand in the rescue, but we were ALL the reason the cat was adopted.  The size of your fan base and the speed with which the cat was rescued are a testament not only to the kind of people with which you associate, but also to the speed with which word can get out using the internet.  You started the avalanche of messages and perhaps, the cat wouldn't have had a pryaer but for your caring post.  But I don't thinkthe person who adopted Roni took her because Chip Coffey was concerned about her; the cat was adopted because the person took her found out about the need to save her from either you or one of your fans, AND because they wanted her.

I'm so pleased the cat is going to be okay.  You ARE the best, Chip, because you care and because you inspire the rest of us to be better than we are.

I have a dog who was found at the age of about 8 weeks along a roadside, by a kindergarten teacher walking her own dog. She took her home and since her own dog was jealous, got permission to bring her to kindergarten class every day. I went to see her and fell in love. She was all tuckered out from playing with the kids, and sleeping in a pile of stuffed animals and pillows. I adopted her that day, and ever since she has been an amazing friend to me. I am diabetic. She senses when my blood sugars are off and won't leave my side. Sticks to me like glue. She is such a wonderful soul.
I have read a few stories about rescued animals saving their owners' lives. I think she was sent to me to watch over mine. I think some things are just meant to be.
Chip, much love to you and to everyone else out there who has it on their hearts to do this kind of work :)

Chip - you never know when a simple act of kindness will change your life.  After our pets died from old age, the house seemed so cold and silent.  I was sitting outside when I noticed a starving little kitten.  Since I had a pantry full of kitty litter and food leftover - I began winning the trust of the kitten with some food and cool water.  I ended up rescuing the kitten and took "him" into my home.  To my surprise "he" was pregnant.  I had never witnessed birth before which was quite an experience.  Now I have four cats (and I'm a "dog person") but I can't begin to measure the happiness and blessings these babies have brought to my family.

There are so many animals out there that desperately need our love and compassion.  Thank you Chip for doing all that you do to make our world a better place!  I swear, if I could clone you - I could take over the world!  I hope other celebrities will follow your example.

Hugs,
-Gary

Someone can't do everything, but everyone can do something. Chip has a good idea going..let's keep using these social networking sites to help these animals. Petfinder.com should do mobile alerts. If anyone can come up with interesting methods that may be effective I'm all ears! I know some area SPCA's have profile's to help find their furry friends homes, more should be like this. Text/tweet/face or space to get their stories out there to someone who can help! If we can't take them in our own homes we should help navigate them to someone who can. Thanks!
