Early voting has begun -- cast your vote today!

Most of my family was here over the past couple of days in support of my Dad, Jack Carter. I'm going to give you a little idea of what we've been doing.

The whole idea is "retail politics" -- asking as many people as possible for their votes. On Friday morning, we were all together at a Union Hall in Henderson, we got our instructions, and we took off from there. Over the next two days, we probably talked to thousands and thousands of voters. My grandmother, Rosalynn Carter, along with my uncle Jeff, his wife Annette, two of their sons (plus one of their friends), and my uncle Chip with his wife Becky, took off for the airport to go to Reno. Once there, they split up, with representatives of the family going to events around Reno, Carson, Fernley, Fallon, Winnemucca, Elko, and other places.

I stayed in Southern Nevada along with my husband Brendan, my Aunt Amy, and my siblings: my brother Jason, my step-sister Sarah E with her husband Stephen, and my step-brother John with his fiance Mirabai. (Unfortunately, Jason's wife Kate and their 7-week-old baby Henry couldn't come -- but don't worry, they'll be here for election day!) My grandpa, Jimmy Carter, and my Dad and Elizabeth all stayed in Southern Nevada, too. We split up and went out in teams to cover as much ground as possible. We went to a lot of places around Las Vegas and Henderson, but we also covered Laughlin, Searchlight, Moapa Valley, Mesquite, and Pahrump.

We went to shopping centers, other places of business, senior centers, high school football games, swap meets, festivals, VFW posts, the big Gun Show, and wherever we thought there'd be groups of people. We also walked some precincts, knocking on every door. On Saturday morning, we went to some early voting sites to encourage people to vote and also so that people on our teams could cast their own ballots.

It was a really great experience, and by the end of each day, everyone was exhausted. The response we got was great! Almost every person I talked to was amazed that someone would personally ask for their vote. A lot of people said that they were sick of mud-slinging TV ads and automated phone calls that had no personal touch. A few people didn't know that my Dad was running, and we were happy to tell them about him. Of the people I talked to, probably 1 in 4 people would tell me that they could see the "family resemblence" between me, my Dad, and my grandpa. I knew I looked like them, but I didn't know it was that obvious!

I voted early, at the library and I voted for Carter, even though there was a Lib in the running. He hadn't asked me for my vote, after all, and frankly, Jack is the sort of Libertarian I like - Libertarian on personal freedoms, good old fashioned pay as you go fiscal conservative and yet aware of the irreducible necessity for enough government to keep people from treading upon one another.

What I'm very much hoping to see is a sea-change in congress - both house and senate - away from punitive legislative philosophies. Ever since the Republicans have been in power, the legislative remedy for any problem has been assign blame and then haul out a huge hammer and smash whatever and whoever is "being bad."

From No Child Left Behind to Welfare Reform to the Republican approach to "reforming" Medicare, everything amounts to a shedding of responsibility for the fate of the less fortunate, the less adaptable and the less "capable" in a purely financial sense.

It's a great philosophy if your main area of skill in life is creating investment income, but most of us have neither the skill nor the passion for that.

And by "most," I mean the large majority of the American people will not benefit from privatizing social security, any more than we have benefited by the "privatising' of health care. I'd prefer to see a society in which we are all expected to be responsible in our best ways, and empowered by the best talents of others, rather than being forced to compete like rats in a sack - which seems to be the Republican ideal for "responsibility."

What we do need is some serious attention to the structural reform of government, improvement of it's efficiencies and in light of that, a drastic simplification of regulatory mazes.

Jack has either spoken toward all these things or has spoken of doing things that strongly imply them to me. And that's why he got my practical-minded vote. He's pretty much the only person I voted FOR in this election, in every other case it was much more about voting against the Republican.

I have a great deal of hope for this election; my gut tells me that this campaign will turn upon the rural vote and the appeal Jack has for women and conservative voters.

Sarah,
A word of advice.  Get the campaign website and the website links right.
I am a native born Nevadan voting overseas.  I am trying to figure out why I should vote for a newcomer like your father.  When I click on the link on your MySpace add " to find out more" I go right to a page to sign up for contributions.  That is offensive.  Instead of finding out who the guy is, I am supposed to give money.  When I try to link to the main campaign website, I get a "not responding", which either means it is swamped by others trying to find out who he is or whoever set up the site has ineptly not provided enough bandwidth.
I want a strong alternative to the Republican, but I need to know more than that he raised peanuts as a kid or that his family is all over the county.
You don't have much time left, better pay attention to all your sources on the Internet.  Please get the message to the campaign.  Good luck.

I'm really sorry, Chuck.  Our official website has been down -- it's a server problem and we've been working on it.  The reason you got sent to the Contribution page is because when the website first went down (about 16 hours ago), we had just sent a big email to supporters asking for money and many of them were calling the office asking where to go.

I apologize, and I promise that as soon as the website is back up in full, you'll be able to find out all about him.
